Mary Rampellini's top 3-year-olds at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 16

FAR RIGHT struck first in the 3-year-old series at Oaklawn Park when he won the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes over a drifting MR. Z. The pair was set to meet again Monday in the Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest Stakes, the first major prep for the Arkansas Derby, but the race was canceled due to inclement weather. The Southwest is to be rescheduled for either Saturday or Sunday, according to Oaklawn spokeswoman Jennifer Hoyt.

1. MR. Z
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Pedigree: Malibu Moon–Stormy Bear, by Storm Cat
Last Race: 3rd in Smarty Jones on Jan. 19 at OP
Last Beyer/Best Beyer: 85/91
Target Race: Southwest, Feb. 21 or 22 at OP
Comment: He’s battle-tested, having placed in five graded stakes, including a close-up third to Dortmund in the Los Alamitos Futurity. He also has presence as a powerful-looking colt, and while he’s quite quick, he’s shown rateability in both his races and works.

2. I SPENT IT
Trainer: Anthony Dutrow
Pedigree: Super Saver–Rateeba, by Sky Mesa
Last Race: 6th in Champagne on Oct. 4 at Belmont
Last Beyer/Best Beyer: 59/85
Target Race: Gazebo, March 21 at OP
Comment: The winner of the Grade 2 Saratoga Special over Mr. Z in August, he’s a long-range candidate for the Arkansas Derby, with his possible steppingstone to the race being the six-furlong Gazebo, co-owner Alex Lieblong said.
3. FAR RIGHT

Pedigree: Notional–Zindi, by Vindication
Last Race: 1st in Smarty Jones on Jan. 19 at OP
Last Beyer/Best Beyer: 89/89
Target Race: Southwest, Feb. 21 or 22 at OP
Comment: He’s developing into a dangerous late runner. He has natural speed but has proven to be effective from well off the pace, overcoming trouble to save third in the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot, then taking the Smarty Jones.
4. PRIVATE PROSECT
Trainer: Mike Campbell
Pedigree: Discreet Cat–Private Deputy, by Private Terms
Last Race: 4th in Smarty Jones on Jan. 19 at OP
Last Beyer/Best Beyer: 84/85
Target Race: Southwest, Feb. 21 or 22 at OP
Comment: He advanced to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last fall after winning three of his first four starts, including a two-turn stakes race at Prairie Meadows. In the BC, he was stepped on out of the gate, and one of his shoes became sprung, or displaced, and he ran on that shoe, according to Campbell.

Last Race: 1st in Martha Washington on Jan. 31 at OP
Last Beyer/Best Beyer: 77/87
Target Race: Honeybee, March 7 at OP
Comment: The champion 2-year-old filly of 2014, she won her seasonal debut by a head in the one-mile Martha Washington while spotting runner-up Sarah Sis five pounds. For the Honeybee, Take Charge Brandi returns to the distance of her wins in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Grade 1 Starlet.
2. SARAH SIS

Pedigree: Sharp Humor–Emerald Gal, by Gilded Time
Last Race: 2nd in Martha Washington on Jan. 31 at OP
Last Beyer/Best Beyer: 77/82
Target Race: Honeybee, March 7 at OP
Comment: She took the overland route when missing by a head to champion Take Charge Brandi in the Martha Washington. One start prior, she missed by a neck to the undefeated Promise Me Silver in the Dixie Belle at Oaklawn. Since that race, Promise Me Silver has improved her record to 6 for 6, taking a division of the Texas Stallion Stakes by more than nine lengths at Sam Houston.
