Once beaten and always favored, Faiza is expected to begin a new win streak Saturday in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar. Although the dirt mile is restricted to 3-year-old fillies, and the least significant of five stakes Saturday, bettors may argue the race-8 Torrey Pines is the most important on the Del Mar card. The reason – Faiza is an obvious pick six single candidate on mandatory payout day. The pick six covers races 6-11, and Faiza will be among the most heavily favored runners in the sequence as she tries to bounce back from the first loss of her six-start career in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico. Faiza finished third at odds-on; she has been favored every start. Bob Baffert trains Faiza, a four-time graded stakes winner facing nine Torrey Pines rivals whose combined record in graded stakes is 0 for 15. On class, Faiza stands out. On speed, not so much. Ceiling Crusher, a two-time California-bred stakes winner, has earned higher figures than Faiza and has a tough-trip excuse for a recent third at odds-on. Anywho also has earned a higher figure than Faiza, and likewise enters the Torrey Pines off compromising trips in two recent losses. :: DRF's 2023 Del Mar headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more. Ceiling Crusher and Anywho are the main threats to Faiza in the 10-runner Torrey Pines, while borderline contenders include graded-placed late-runner Justique and stakes-winning front-runner Flying Connection. Other entrants are Pink Ace, Coffee in Bed, Infinite Diamond, Olivia Twist, and Ocean Club. Faiza’s victories include the Grade 1 Starlet at Los Alamitos, Grade 3 Las Virgenes and Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita, and Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks. Based on recent workouts at Del Mar, Faiza should return to form Saturday under Flavien Prat. Her career-best Beyer Speed Figure is 89. Ceiling Crusher won two highly rated California-bred stakes for trainer Doug O’Neill in spring at Santa Anita, with Beyers of 94 and 92, a sprint and a route. She benefited by in-the-clear trips in both, but as the odds-on favorite last out, Ceiling Crusher found herself inside and behind horses, was never comfortable, and finished third. The outside post Saturday for Ceiling Crusher is not a deal-breaker. Ceiling Crusher has the speed to establish a pressing trip in the clear without losing excessive ground. Edwin Maldonado rides. Anywho is trained by John Sadler, who is tied with Baffert with seven Torrey Pines victories. Anywho missed by a neck after a slow start and heavy traffic in a recent allowance. Her only route was a wide-trip fourth in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks. Sadler will add a small-cup blinker to Anywho, whose rider is Hector Berrios. Her top Beyer is 90. :: Get Del Mar Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Available every race day.  Justique needed her last start, a fourth-place allowance finish that was her first start in five months. Although she might prefer one turn, both wins for trainer John Shirreffs came at Del Mar. Mike Smith rides. The last three Torrey Pines winners – Harvest Moon, Private Mission, and Midnight Memories – repeated next out in the Grade 2 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita. The early favorite for the Zenyatta on Oct. 1 is the Baffert-trained Grade 1 winner Adare Manor. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
