Kentucky Derby: Who’s Hot, Who’s Not for Feb. 25

WHO’S HOT

Itsaknockout, still unbeaten after being placed first via disqualification in the Fountain of Youth last Saturday, is the lone newcomer to this week’s Derby Watch top 20. He is a 20-1 shot on the Kentucky Derby future line set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form’s national handicapper. American Pharoah, last year’s champion 2-year-old male, is now the third choice at 10-1 after being 12-1 a week ago. Khozan also saw his odds drop slightly after his allowance win Sunday. He’s now 12-1 after being 15-1 a week ago. Risen Star winner International Star is down to 20-1 after being 30-1 last week.

WHO’S NOT

Hopeful Stakes winner Competitive Edge is not being pushed to make the Derby and thus was dropped from the top 20. Texas Red saw his odds drift higher, from 10-1 to 12-1, as he continues to recuperate from an ill-timed foot injury. Ocean Knight floated up to 20-1 from 15-1, while Imperia moved from 20-1 to 30-1 after he finished fifth in the Risen Star in his 3-year-old debut.

ON THE BUBBLE

Keen Ice, third in the Risen Star, just missed the cut this week, as did The Truth Or Else, who made a sustained rally to finish second in the Southwest Stakes in his 3-year-old debut Sunday. Others who are knocking at the door include Frammento, Lord Nelson, Metaboss, and Mr. Z. Only two of the top 20 are scheduled to start this weekend – Daredevil and The Great War. If either falters, that could open a slot. Otherwise, the list should hold for another week.
