WHO’S HOT Modernist, Mr. Monomoy, and Silver Prospector – all of whom won graded stakes races last weekend – are the newest members of the Derby Watch top 20. Mr. Monomoy, who won the faster division of the Risen Star, is 15-1 on the Kentucky Derby future line set by Marty McGee of Daily Racing Form. Modernist and Silver Prospector are both 20-1. Gouverneur Morris, winner of an allowance race last Friday in his 3-year-old debut, is down to 12-1 after being 20-1 a week ago. Tiz the Law remains the 4-1 favorite. :: DERBY WATCH: Top 20 Kentucky Derby contenders with comments from Jay Privman and Marty McGee WHO’S NOT To make room for the three newcomers, the three who have been removed from the list are Anneau d’Or and Gold Street – both of whom ran poorly in stakes last weekend – and Three Technique. In order to balance the line owing to the addition of the newcomers, McGee raised the prices on Authentic (from 10-1 last week to 12-1 this week), Honor A.P. (20-1 to 30-1), and Basin (30-1 to 50-1). ON THE BUBBLE Charlatan, who turned in a spectacular performance in his debut last Sunday at Santa Anita – recording a 105 Beyer Speed Figure – just missed the cut this week. Maxfield finally turned in his first work of the year, but with the clock ticking he needs to be farther along in his training to forge his way onto the list. Azul Coast, winner of the El Camino Real Derby, Major Fed, and Silver State are among the many knocking on the door. This weekend marks the only one between now and April 11 – when the Arkansas Derby and Lexington are held – when there are no point-scoring races scheduled, so the list should remain static over the next week, barring an unforeseen setback.
