Kentucky Derby: Who’s hot, who’s not for April 22

WHO’S HOT

After the final scoring race for the Kentucky Derby is run, the Derby Watch top 20 becomes entirely points driven, and any horse who works his way into the top 20 must be included, even if the Derby Watch committee doesn’t think much of his chances or even if his starting status is in doubt. Thus, the lone addition to this week’s list is Madefromlucky, who is far from certain to run but is ranked 20th on points as of Wednesday and, therefore, must be included. He is a 30-1 shot on the future line set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form’s national handicapper. The only other tweak on Watchmaker’s line was regarding Upstart, who is back down to 12-1 after being raised to 15-1 last week.

WHO’S NOT

Madefromlucky got into the top 20 because of the injury last weekend to One Lucky Dane, who had a small fracture in an ankle following a workout at Santa Anita and is off the Triple Crown trail.

Keen Ice and Frammento are ranked 21st and 22nd, so they are the next horses who get into the Derby field if there are defections from the top 20. Entries are taken and post positions drawn April 29. Up to four also-eligibles will be allowed, with preference in the order of their standing on the points list.
