Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Super Stock

Nicole Russo|Apr 14, 2021
Super Stock wins the 2021 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park
Coady Photography Arkansas Derby upsetter Super Stock is by Florida Derby winner Dialed In, a grandson of A.P. Indy. His dam, Super Girlie, has produced a string of sprinters.

Super Stock

Dialed In – Super Girlie, by Closing Argument

Bred in Kentucky by Pedro Gonzalez and P.J. Gonzalez ($70,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Keith Asmussen and Erv Woolsey)

Super Stock put himself into the Kentucky Derby field by winning the final major points race, the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. In the process, he also gave the sireline of the late, great A.P. Indy another representative in the race.

Dialed In, winner of the 2011 Florida Derby, is by Horse of the Year Mineshaft, in turn a son of champion, classic winner, and classic sire A.P. Indy. Dialed In’s most successful runner is Gunnevera, who inherited the stamina of this sireline, finishing on the board in major route races for older horses, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Dubai World Cup, and Pegasus World Cup.

The A.P. Indy sireline is likely to be well represented in this Derby. Unbeaten juvenile champion and race favorite Essential Quality is by the legendary stallion’s grandson Tapit. Wood Memorial winner Bourbonic is by A.P. Indy’s son Bernardini. UAE Derby runner-up Panadol is by A.P. Indy’s son Flatter. Longshot Hidden Stash is by Tapit’s son Constitution.

Dialed In is also the sire of Get Her Number, a Grade 1 winner last year as a juvenile but unplaced in two prep races this season.

Super Girlie, by 2005 Kentucky Derby runner-up Closing Argument, was a useful racemare, winning 7 of 39 starts and earning six figures while being successful from six furlongs to a mile. She is the dam of four winners from five starters, and Super Stock is the outlier among those in terms of stamina.

Boujie Girl – also bred on the A.P. Indy line, being by Tapit’s son Flashback – won at up to six furlongs. She finished third in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at six furlongs and third in the Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs as a juvenile, both times behind Bellafina. Super Girlie’s son For the Gipper won at up to a mile, and Shakem N Breakem has won at up to six furlongs.

The most successful runners in this extended family are Heir Kitty, winner of the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes around one turn, and Puerto Rican Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Estrellero.
