Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Mandaloun

Mandaloun
Into Mischief – Brooch, by Empire Maker
Bred in Kentucky by Juddmonte Farms
Reigning North American leading sire Into Mischief secured his first classic victory last year when eventual Horse of the Year Authentic won the postponed Kentucky Derby, as well as the Breeders’ Cup Classic at the same 1 1/4-mile distance. Among Into Mischief’s prospects this year as he seeks a second consecutive Derby victory is Mandaloun, who made a big move from 30-1 to 10-1 on this week’s Derby Watch line following his victory in the Grade 2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds. The Juddmonte homebred has a female family generally slanted toward route ability, albeit on turf in Europe.
Brooch won four of her eight career starts for Juddmonte, all at a mile or beyond. She won the Group 3 Lanwades Stud Stakes going 1 3/16 miles at age 3, and the following year took the Group 2 Ridgewood Pearl Stakes at a mile, both in Ireland. Her first foal is Radetsky, by champion sprinter Speightstown. Thus far his maximum winning distance is seven furlongs, on synthetic tracks.
Brooch, by Empire Maker, is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Caponata, who won at up to 1 1/4 miles. Both bucked the example of their dam, the Dansili mare Daring Diva, whose biggest win came in the Criterium de Vitesse going five furlongs in France.

Daring Diva is a full sister to Irish highweight Emulous, who won the Group 1 Matron Stakes at a mile, and to French Group 3 winner First Sitting, whose wins all came at route distances between 1 1/8 miles and 1 7/16 miles.
Empire Maker, winner of the 2003 Belmont Stakes for Juddmonte, has continued to represent the classic Unbridled line as a source of stamina, mainly through his sons and grandsons. His son Pioneerof the Nile won the 2008 Santa Anita Derby before finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. As a stallion he went on to sire 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
Empire Maker’s son Bodemeister took the 2012 Arkansas Derby before finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He, in turn, sired 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming in his first crop. As a broodmare sire, Empire Maker is represented by Grade 1 winners Arklow, Outwork, Separationofpowers, and Valiance. All were Grade 1 winners around two turns, except for Separationofpowers, who had two Grade 1 wins around one turn.
