Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Galilean

Nicole Russo|Feb 20, 2019
Galilean wins 2019 California Cup Derby (Barb)
Barbara D. Livingston Galilean paid $2.10 with his victory in the California Cup Derby.

Galilean
Uncle Mo – Fresia, by El Prado

(Bred in California by Bar C Racing Stables ($60,000 Barretts August yearling purchase by Quarter Pole Enterprises; $600,000 Barretts spring juvenile purchase by West Point Thoroughbreds)

Galilean is out to become the fifth Kentucky Derby winner born in California, joining Morvich (1922), Swaps (1955), Decidedly (1962), and California Chrome (2014). Like California Chrome, the colt is heading toward open company off victories in the King Glorious Stakes and California Cup Derby. A May foal, Galilean has his roots with a young Kentucky classic sire and one of the most influential female families in Canadian history.

Juvenile champion Uncle Mo’s record-breaking first crop was led by Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and Eclipse Award champion Nyquist, who went on to win the 2016 Kentucky Derby and Florida Derby. Uncle Mo also has had a presence on the Triple Crown trail with 2016 Wood Memorial winner Outwork; 2016 Lecomte winner Mo Tom, who went on to win the Ohio Derby; 2017 Robert B. Lewis winner Royal Mo, who was third in the Santa Anita Derby; and 2017 Arkansas Derby runner-up Conquest Mo Money.

Additional evidence of the stallion’s ability to impart stamina is found with four-time graded stakes winner Unbridled Mo, who won last year’s Apple Blossom over champion Unique Bella; Grade 1 route winners Dream Tree, Gomo, and Mo Town; Jim Dandy winner Laoban; and Ohio-bred Mo Dont No, a specialist at 1 1/4 miles.

Galilean is the first winner out of Fresia, who is out of stakes-placed Fleet of Foot, making her a half-sister to Grade 3 winner His Race To Win. Fleet of Foot is a half-sister to Canadian champion Hello Seattle. Broodmare sire El Prado is represented in that regard by the likes of Kentucky Oaks winner Believe You Can, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Outstrip, and Grade 1 winners Bit of Whimsy, Hilda’s Passion, and Laragh.

Fresia’s third dam is Canadian champion Classy ‘n Smart, a half-sister to three other Canadian champions, including multiple Grade 1 winner Sky Classic. Classy ‘n Smart produced four graded stakes winners led by Canadian Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Distaff heroine Dance Smartly, a Sovereign and Eclipse Award champion who went on to produce two Queen’s Plate winners, and Grade 1 winner and leading sire Smart Strike.

This family has continued to produce through the generations, as recent standouts from this line include Grade 1 winner Moreno and Grade 3 winner Speightster.
