Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Ten new names for Pool 3

Ten new names are in the lineup for Pool 3 of the 2019 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern for the customary three-day run.
Pool 3 coincides with the only futures pool toward the 2019 Kentucky Oaks, with an Oaks-Derby double future wager being offered for the second year.

The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, has been pegged as the 4-1 morning-line favorite in Pool 3 by Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia, with Game Winner the shortest individually listed interest at 5-1. Then come Code of Honor and Improbable, both at 8-1, followed by Instagrand (10-1), War of Will (10-1), Bourbon War (12-1), and Hidden Scroll (12-1).
The new names for Pool 3 are Anothertwistafate, Code of Honor, Country House, Dream Maker, Galilean, Intrepid Heart, Mind Control, Roadster, Spinoff, and Well Defined. Code of Honor and Roadster actually are returnees from Pool 1.
Gone from Pool 2 are Coliseum, Global Campaign, Gray Attempt, Knicks Go, Limonite, Maximus Mischief, Network Effect, Owendale, Tacitus, and Walking Thunder.

Win and exacta wagering are available, with odds and will-pays locked in only when the pool closes Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern. Five of the Pool 3 horses are expected to be in action Saturday: Dream Maker, Well Defined, and Win Win Win in the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs, and Instagrand and Mind Control in the Gotham at Aqueduct.
The field closed as the 6-5 favorite in Pool 1, which drew total handle of $258,389 when it was held Nov. 22-25 in tandem with the Derby Sires Future Wager. The field was the 5-2 favorite in Pool 2, which drew handle of $533,977 on Feb. 8-10. The fourth and final pool will be held April 5-7.
Combined handle on Pool 3 in 2018 was $394,763, up nearly 6 percent over the corresponding pool in 2017.
Last year in Pool 3, the field closed as the 4-1 favorite, with the eventual Derby winner, Justify, closing at 6-1. In Pool 3 in 2017, the eventual winner, Always Dreaming, closed at 33-1.
The record for handle in a single pool is $631,304, set in 2012, while the record for aggregate handle in a single year is $1,893,353, set last year.
In the 2019 Kentucky Oaks futures, Bellafina has been pegged as the 5-1 morning-line favorite, followed by a foursome at 8-1: Chasing Yesterday, Jaywalk, Restless Rider, and the field. The Oaks futures will close Sunday at 6:30, or a half-hour after Pool 3 closes.
Last year in the Oaks pool, the field closed as a 5-1 favorite, while the eventual winner, Monomoy Girl, closed at 6-1. Combined win and exacta handle was $70,993.
The Oaks-Derby double futures handled $69,725 when it was introduced for the first time last year. The eventual $2 payoff for the combination of Monomoy Girl and Justify was $71. The first year for Oaks futures was 2003.
In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.
The Oaks is set for May 3 and the Derby for May 4.
