LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, occupied its customary position as the favorite after fairly strong wagering during the first few hours of Pool 1 of the 2011 Kentucky Derby Future Wager. As of 5:30 p.m. Eastern, and with $51,633 in the win pool, the field (No. 24) was the 3-2 choice over Uncle Mo (No. 23) at 2-1, followed by Dialed In (No. 7) at 7-1, To Honor and Serve (No. 22) at 14-1, and Brethren (No. 3) at 17-1. There was $8,923 in the exacta pool. Pool 1 opened Friday at noon Eastern and closes Sunday at 6 p.m. Pool 2 is set for March 11-13 and Pool 3 for April 1-3. Every year since Churchill Downs began offering parimutuel futures in 1999, the field has closed as the favorite in Pool 1. A Pool 1 field horse has wound up winning the Derby in five of those 12 prior years, the latest being Mine That Bird in 2009. Wagering into Pool 1 can be expected to be more brisk after results are known for the lone prep to be run while the pool is open, the Risen Star on Saturday at Fair Grounds. Last year, $466,048 was bet into Pool 1, including exactas. The futures are nonrefundable win and exacta wagers with $2 minimums (including $1 part-wheels or boxes) and a 16 percent takeout. As with any parimutuel wager, odds will change throughout the weekend, with final odds established at closing time. Real-time updates of win odds and exacta will-pays are available through a number of sources, including television monitors at tracks and wagering outlets and on kentuckyderby.com. The 137th Derby is set for May 7.
