Juvenile Fillies Turf: O’Neill has two prospects

Trainer Doug O’Neill is considering the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for both Jakaby Jade and Gomo.
Jakaby Jade took advantage when the rail opened up to win the $101,000 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf in her first start in North America. The horse who vacated the rail, which might have cost her a win in the one-mile race, was Gomo, who finished third.
“It was a good race for both of them,” said O’Neill.
He plans on running Jakaby Jade in the $100,000 Surfer Girl at Santa Anita on Oct. 10.
“She came out of the race in excellent shape, and we’ll keep her here for her next start,” he said.
Jakaby Jade went into the Del Mar race off a win in a five-furlong maiden special weight race at Lingfield in Britain on July 25.

O’Neill is going to move Gomo back to dirt for the Grade 1, $400,000 Alcibiades on Friday. The 1 1/16-mile feature at Keeneland is a Win and You’re In race for the Grade 1, $2 million Juvenile Fillies.
“We are keeping our options open with her,” said O’Neill. “We think she might be a better horse on dirt.”
Gomo appears to be capable on both surfaces. A daughter of Uncle Mo, Gomo won a one-mile maiden special weight race on turf by daylight in her second start at Santa Anita and might have won her last race with a better trip. She also was good enough to finish second on the main track at Del Mar in the Grade 2 Sorrento.
There are two Win and You’re In races coming up in the next week. The first is Sunday at Longchamp, where the Group 1 Total Prix Marcel Boussac will take place. There is no guarantee that the winner of the race at about one mile will be sent to the Breeders’ Cup, however.
The winner of next Wednesday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Jessamine at Keeneland undoubtedly will take advantage of the expenses-paid berth in the one-mile Juvenile Fillies Turf.
Trainer Chad Brown will have at least one runner in the Juvenile Fillies Turf with Last Waltz. Brown won the inaugural running with Maram, and last year, his Lady Eli put on quite a show in winning the Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita.
Last Waltz is coming off a third-place finish in the Group 3 C.L. and M.F. Weld Park Stakes at The Curragh on Sept. 27. Brown said she is scheduled to arrive in North America next week.
