Journalism to stand at Coolmore's Ashford Stud at end of racing career

Journalism, the current favorite on Daily Racing Form’s Derby Watch list, will stand at Coolmore's Ashford Stud upon his retirement from racing, the farm announced Monday night.

The Coolmore team will also join Journalism’s current ownership partnership – Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Elayne Stables 5 LLC, and Robert LaPenta – in his continuing racing career. On Monday, Journalism was entered in Saturday’s Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby.

“He's a very exciting prospect, [a] very good-looking colt with an impeccable pedigree,” Coolmore’s M.V. Magnier said in a release. “We look forward to a big career with him.”

Journalism, who won a maiden race in his second start for trainer Michael McCarthy, prevailed in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity in December. He then was an impressive winner of the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes in his 3-year-old debut on March 1.

An $825,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling selection by Eclipse, Journalism is by consistent classic sire Curlin, who is emerging as a sire-of-sires, with young classic sire Good Magic and others achieving success.

Journalism is out of graded stakes winner Mopotism, by the late Ashford sire Uncle Mo. Uncle Mo has made an impact as a broodmare sire, with Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna among his Grade 1 performers.
