Janney, Phipps earn breeders’ award for Orb’s Derby

In addition to the $1,414,800 winner’s share of the Kentucky Derby purse for Orb’s victory, owner/breeders Stuart Janney and Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps also will receive a $50,000 bonus from the Kentucky Breeders’ Incentive Fund.

The Malibu Moon colt was foaled at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., making his breeders eligible to receive a $50,000 incentive for winning the classic race. The winning breeder of the Kentucky Oaks is eligible for the same bonus, but because this year’s winner Princess of Sylmar is a Pennsylvania-bred, it was not awarded.

A division of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, the KBIF is funded by sales taxes paid when breeding a stallion to a mare in Kentucky. Breeders are eligible who have bred their mare to a Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund-registered Kentucky stallion and board their mare in the state from first cover until the foaling.

Since 2006, the KBIF has awarded breeders more than $1.3 million for winning the Kentucky Derby and Oaks. In total, the fund has awarded more than $87 million to Kentucky breeders for winning eligible races all over the world.

“The quality and pedigree of the Kentucky Thoroughbred continues to set the pace around the world,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “The added incentive to breed Thoroughbreds in Kentucky and receive funds for winning eligible national and international races is a great boost to Kentucky’s breeding business.”
