Trainer Bob Baffert woke up Monday morning with one Breeders’ Cup Sprint starter. But by mid-morning, he may have added a second after watching his undefeated 3-year-old Indianapolis work alongside defending Sprint winner Secret Circle from the gate at Santa Anita. Secret Circle, who will likely go postward as the favorite for a second straight year in the Sprint, and Indianapolis both worked six furlongs from the gate in 1:10.40 over the fast Santa Anita surface. The work had Baffert gushing with enthusiasm about both horses a short while later. “Secret Circle worked really great,” Baffert said. “And Indianapolis worked so well, I’ve got to think about pre-entering him too. I’ll see how he comes out of it once I get him back at the barn before make a final decision.” Secret Circle overcame a troubled trip to register a popular neck victory in the 2013 Sprint. He has started just twice since without a win, having finished second in the Grade 2 Palos Verdes on Feb. 2 and third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Oct. 4. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2014: See DRF’s top contenders Indianapolis, a 3-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro, is unbeaten in three career starts. He became a stakes winner in his 2014 debut when capturing the San Pedro at Santa Anita on Jan. 20, then went idle for eight months before winning a second-level optional-claiming race at Santa Anita when facing older horses for the first time on Sept. 26. Like Baffert, trainer Chad Brown was happy enough with what he saw from his lightly raced 3-year-old Bakken in his five-furlong work Monday at Belmont Park to pre-enter him later that day for the BC Sprint. Bakken, working solo after the renovation break, completed the distance in 1:00.49 over a fast but dull main track, covering his final quarter in 24.40 seconds while going easily throughout. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.50. “I thought the horse worked really well this morning,” said Brown, who made the decision to run Bakken in the BC Sprint after conferring with his owner, William Warren. Bakken has won 3 of 5 starts, most recently registering a popular three-length decision over second-level optional-claiming company at Belmont on Oct. 2. He had finished second, three-quarters of a length by Palace, in the Grade 2 True North in early June. Palace will likely go postward among the favorites along with Secret Circle, Private Zone, and Rich Tapestry in the six-furlong Sprint. :: Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Results, replays, charts, and more Speaking of Palace, trainer Linda Rice said that in all likelihood, she will ship the two-time Grade 1 winner to Santa Anita on Tuesday as originally planned rather than keep him in New York another week. “I thought about leaving him here and having his final work at Belmont, but it’s very hot in California and there is a threat of rain here later in the week, and those two factors will probably put him on the plane Tuesday,” said Rice. “He’d have his final Sprint work at Santa Anita either Saturday or Sunday. Palace worked a sharp six furlongs in 1:11.99 over the Belmont training track on Saturday. – Additional reporting by Jay Privman
