By the time I’ll Have Another and Nyquist reached mid-March of their 3-year-old seasons, they were already stakes winners on their way to wins in the Kentucky Derby for owners Paul and Zillah Reddam and trainer Doug O’Neill. If the same partnership has a runner in this year’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6, they will do so with a colt prepared in a different manner. I Don’t Get It, by Cloud Computing, won a maiden race at a mile at Santa Anita last Saturday with an 87 Beyer Speed Figure, and the win has the Reddams and O’Neill hoping he can develop into a Kentucky Derby runner. O’Neill said on Wednesday that I Don’t Get It is under consideration for a Derby prep race at 1 1/8 miles on April 8 on opposite sides of the country - the Grade 1 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby or the Grade 2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. Both races are worth $750,000. I Don’t Get It won his third start last Saturday, closing from fourth in a field of seven to win by three-quarters of a length under jockey Mario Gutierrez. Gutierrez, closely allied with the Reddams and O’Neill, rode I’ll Have Another and Nyquist to wins in the Kentucky Derby in 2012 and 2016. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2023: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more I Don’t Get It may not have stakes experience, but O’Neill said that is not a major concern. I Don’t Get It finished fourth in his first two starts, in maiden races at 6 1/2 furlongs in January and at a mile on Feb. 12. He was the 11-10 favorite last Saturday. “He’s got a lot of maturity for a horse with three starts,” O’Neill said. “He laid back and he handled the kickback. “He came back in good shape. We’ve been excited about him for awhile.” I Don’t Get It, purchased for $42,000 as a yearling in Kentucky, is the first foal to race out of Flat Out Gittin It, a three-time winner whose best result in a stakes was a third in the $65,000 Prairie Meadows Lassie for 2-year-old fillies in Iowa in 2017. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
