Fair Grounds

How to bet Fair Grounds's Pick 4 - Feb. 23, 2013

Michael Hammersly|Feb 21, 2013

Here's my race-by-race rundown of Saturday's pick four at Fair Grounds on Feb. 23, 2013. I'm building my wager with TicketMaker, found exclusively on DRF.com. I'm betting in increments of $0.50, with a $100.00 total budget.

Race 8 (The Mineshaft Handicap)

MARK VALESKI (#2) hadn’t run in 8 months but gave INFRATTINI (#7) fits in the Louisiana Handicap Jan. 19. With that under his belt and some strong works he can turn the tables. Of course, he has to improve as INFRATTINI has blossomed having won 4 straight with big Beyers in tow. GOLDEN TICKET (#5), winner of the Grade 1 Travers last summer, came back smokin’ at GP with a big win Jan. 26. HERO OF ORDER (#6) has done all his best work here including winning last year’s Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. A sharp 2nd here Feb. 3 off the bench shows he’s doing well and still likes it here.

Race 9 (The Rachel Alexandra)

UNLIMITED BUDGET (#7) appears to hold all the aces for Pletcher as the $475K filly won her first 2 starts at AQU in November impressively, including the Grade 2 Demoiselle where she beat Emollient (who came back to win easily at GP recently). DANCINGINTHECIRCLE (#3) looked super blasting foes in a stakes at DED and has worked superbly since.

Race10 (The Risen Star)

NORMANDY INVASION (#9) hinted at major ability at AQU in November and makes his much-anticipated 2013 debut. PALACE MALICE (#6) has flashed big-time talent for Pletcher and a strong 2nd in his comeback at GP sets him up well for this. CODE WEST (#2) is a dangerous SoCal Baffert raider who’s run well and who looks that much better after running 2nd to Super Ninety Nine last time (that guy won the Grade 3 Southwest by 11 at OP Monday). PROUD STRIKE (#1) looked super blasting maidens on this track at this trip last month. MYLUTE (#5) put it all together to win in a romp over this track at this type of trip Dec. 26. OXBOW (#10) likewise had the light go on as he romped by 11 1/2 in the Grade Lecomte here Jan. 19.

Race 11 (Maiden Special Weight)

TREAD (#5) ran too good to lose in her Jan. 12 debut here as she ran 2nd beaten just a nose. PRETTY PETAL (#1) ran on nicely for 3rd in her debut here Jan. 12, just 2 lengths behind TREAD. MERVEILLEUSE (#7) has worked well for Amoss who is sharp first out (27%). CHARADE (#8) likewise boasts strong works for a trainer (Jones) who’s strong first out (24%).

My Wagers

With TicketMaker I'm able to put greater emphasis on my "A" selections while still having coverage with my "B" and "C" picks just in case. I come out $4.00 under budget.
