Charlatan, Honor A. P., and Nadal, three of the nation’s leading 3-year-olds, were given workouts at Santa Anita on Sunday. With the coronavirus outbreak temporarily disrupting racing at Santa Anita, and at many other venues nationwide, it is unclear where the trio will appear next, although the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on May 2 is a possibility. Honor A. P., was an intended starter in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, but the race was postponed from Saturday of this weekend to an undetermined date after Santa Anita was ordered closed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on March 27. Sunday, Honor A. P. worked a half-mile in 49 seconds. Honor A. P. was second in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on March 7 in his 3-year-old and stakes debut. Charlatan, trained by Baffert, has soared like a rocket into the national 3-year-old discussion with two electrifying wins at Santa Anita in recent months. Charlatan, who worked five furlongs in 1:00 on Sunday, won a maiden special weight race at six furlongs by 5 3/4 lengths on Feb. 16, and an allowance race with an $80,000 claiming option at a mile by 10 1/4 lengths on March 14. Charlatan earned Beyer Speed Figures of 105 and 106 in those races. Sunday was supposed to be a race day for the 4-year-old filly Bellafina. A six-time stakes winner, Bellafina was an intended runner in the Grade 3 Las Flores Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs at Santa Anita. Instead, she worked a half-mile in 48.40 seconds. Fashionably Fast, the winner of four consecutive stakes for California-breds since early October, worked a half-mile in 48.20 seconds. Trained by Dean Pederson, Fashionably Fast has been mentioned as a candidate for the Grade 2 Kona Gold Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on April 19. Without a date for the resumption of racing at Santa Anita, the Kona Gold Stakes may be postponed.
