Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Her Emmynency bona-fide contender for Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Benoit & Associates After winning the Surfer Girl under Joe Talamo, Her Emmynency will be pointed to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Her Emmynency stamped herself as a serious contender for the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with an impressive win in the $100,000 Surfer Girl at Santa Anita on Sunday. With Joe Talamo aboard, she stalked the early pace while sitting behind horses along the rail, and when a hole opened up at the top of the stretch, she burst to the lead with an eye-catching move.

Her Emmynency received an 84 Beyer Speed Figure, which compares favorably with the 78 that Lady Eli earned for her sharp win in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo at Belmont Park on Sept. 28. Lady Eli heads a strong contingent that trainer Chad Brown is pointing to the one-mile Juvenile Fillies Turf on Oct. 31.

Trainer Michael Stidham was looking for Her Emmynency to run a big race in her first try on turf, and she more than lived up to his expectations.

“We were hoping for that kind of result, but in this business, you learn not to expect it,” said Stidham. “We were obviously very pleased with how she ran.”

Stidham was especially impressed with her final eighth of a mile in 11.68 seconds.

“She was pretty close to an honest pace, and to finish like she did was very exciting,” he said.

The horse was on her toes Monday.

“Everything looks good, and hopefully she’ll stay healthy until the Breeders’ Cup,” said Stidham.

Conquest Harlanate earned a berth in the Juvenile Fillies Turf when she won the Grade 2 Natalma at Woodbine on Sept. 13, and she appears to be primed for a big effort following her win at Woodbine in the Grade 3 Mazarine on Sunday. Trained by Mark Casse, she was sent off as the overwhelming favorite in the 1 1/16-mile race on Polytrack and rewarded her backers with an easy 2 1/4-length win over Brooklynsway.

The last Win and You’re In race from Europe was completed Sunday, with Found winning the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac for 2-year-old fillies at Longchamp. Trainer Aidan O’Brien said she probably won’t take advantage of the Breeders’ Cup berth she earned and likely would be turned out for the year.

According to Adrian Beaumont of the International Racing Bureau, Malabar, who was bottled up early and finished full of run to finish fourth in the Boussac, is a possibility for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Trained by Mick Channon, Malabar won the Group 3 Whiteley Clinic Prestige Stakes at Goodwood on Aug. 23.

The final Win and You’re In race for the Juvenile Fillies Turf takes place at Keeneland on Wednesday. It is the Grade 3, $150,000 Jessamine, which appears to be a wide-open race.

Quality Rocks is an interesting possibility. She has won both of her starts, which came on synthetic tracks at Presque Isle Downs and Arlington Park. In her last start, she won the Arlington-Washington Lassie on Sept. 8 for trainer William Helmbrecht. Following that win, she was sold privately and transferred to trainer Bill Mott.
