HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The top five finishers from the Jan. 30 Holy Bull plus a Breeders’ Cup winner are among the prospective starters for the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, which will be run next Saturday for the 74th time at Gulfstream Park. Greatest Honour, the Shug McGaughey-trained colt who emerged as one of the leading Derby prospects with his 5 3/4-length romp in the Holy Bull, will have Jose Ortiz aboard again when he returns from his Payson Park base for the $300,000 Fountain of Youth. Trainer Mike Maker said Friday he expected to confirm a riding assignment for the Fire At Will before the weekend was out. Other probables for the Fountain of Youth include Tarantino, Prime Factor, Papetu, and Jirafales, the respective 2-3-4-5 finishers in the Holy Bull. A handful of possible starters from a nominations list of 36 3-year-olds includes Drain the Clock, an easy last-out winner of the seven-furlong Swale, and one of several nominees from the Dale Romans stable. The status of Prevalence, a flashy Jan. 23 debut winner, is expected to be decided this weekend. Trainer Brendan Walsh said he would prefer to run the Godolphin homebred back in a 1 1/8-mile allowance race that’s listed in the condition book for Thursday, with the Fountain of Youth serving as backup in case the allowance does not fill. The Fountain of Youth, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton, is one of nine graded stakes to be run here next Saturday. All entries will be drawn Wednesday. Joel Rosario rode Vequist to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, but with Rosario unavailable because of pandemic-related travel restrictions, Ortiz has picked up the mount for trainer Butch Reid. Zaajel, with Luis Saez riding for Todd Pletcher, figures as the top threat off her win in the Jan. 30 Forward Gal. Other probables include Adios Trippi, Curlin’s Catch, Dreaming of Drew, Pens Street, and Wholebodemeister. Grade 2, $200,000 Gulfstream Park Mile: Performer, another McGaughey trainee, looms a prohibitive favorite in this one-turn mile for older horses after winning six of his last seven starts. The opposition is expected to include Avant Garde, Eye of a Jedi, Fearless, and Summer Kid. Grade 2, $200,000 Mac Diarmida: The Mike Maker trio of Tide of the Sea, Temple, and Aquaphobia are set to take on all comers in this 1 3/8-mile turf race, with Admission Office among the other probables. Grade 3, $125,000 The Very One: Always Shopping, the Repole Stable mare in career-best form for Pletcher, is strictly the one to beat in this 1 3/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares. Dominga and Heavenly Curlin also go. Grade 3, $125,000 Canadian Turf: Fancy Liquor, Monarchs Glen, Venezuelan Hug, and Winters Back are among the known probables for this 1 1/16-mile turf race for older horses. Grade 3, $125,000 Honey Fox: Got Stormy, working bullets at Palm Meadows after getting a short rest following a fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, will be stretching back out for Mark Casse in this two-turn mile against Zofelle, Tuned, Secret Time, and another four or five fillies and mares. Grade 3, $100,000 Palm Beach: Likely starters for this 1 1/16-mile turf race include Chess’s Dream, a last-out winner of the Kitten’s Joy for Maker, and another six or seven 3-year-olds. Grade 3, $100,000 Herecomesthebride: Pletcher appears to have the one to beat in this 1 1/16-mile turf race in the speedy Con Lima, who is expected to be among a short cast of 3-year-old fillies.
