Forest Caraway, the winner of a maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar on Saturday, is one of several juveniles trainer Peter Miller plans to run in stakes on Labor Day weekend. Forest Caraway is a candidate for the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, a $250,000 race at seven furlongs on Sept. 6. By Bodemeister, Forest Caraway was purchased for $70,000 as a weanling at Keeneland in 2018. On Saturday, Forest Caraway closed fourth in a field of nine to win by 2 1/4 lengths over Illumination, the 7-10 favorite. Forest Caraway ($25.80) ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05, and was the sixth choice. Miller was not bothered that Forest Caraway was overlooked by bettors. “We thought she’d run well,” he said. “You know how good your horse is. I was impressed with how she ran.” :: DRF's Del Mar headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more Forest Caraway is owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds III syndicate, which is reportedly no longer allowed to race in France, according to a recent article in the Racing Post in Great Britain. Phoenix Thoroughbreds announced last week that it would cease racing in Great Britain. Phoenix is allowed to race in California. Questions about the financial arrangements of Phoenix Thoroughbreds arose last November after Amer Abdulaziz of Dubai, who heads the organization, was implicated in a money-laundering scheme in a New York court. Abdulaziz is alleged to have had a role in fraud pertaining to the cryptocurrency One Coin. Prosecutors described One Coin as a Ponzi scheme. Phoenix Thoroughbreds, which was launched in 2017, has owned such runners as Gronkowski, who was second in the 2018 Belmont Stakes and 2019 Dubai World Cup, and Dream Tree, who won the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita in 2018. Miller has several candidates for two $75,000 one-mile turf races for 2-year-olds – the Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 6 and the Juvenile Turf on Sept. 7. The stable could run the recent imports Feathers and Nimbostratus in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Feathers was fifth in the Star Stakes at Sandown Park, near London, on July 21. Nimbostratus, who worked a half-mile on turf at Del Mar in 49.60 seconds on Sunday, won a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs at Navan Racecourse in Ireland, on July 3. Miller’s candidates for the Juvenile Turf are Ebeko, Get Her Number, Herd Immunity, and None Above the Law. Ebeko, a winner at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland last month, is scheduled to arrive at Del Mar on Tuesday, Miller said. Get Her Number won his debut in a maiden special weight race at five furlongs on turf Friday. Herd Immunity was sixth in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes on Aug. 8. His participation in the Juvenile Turf depends on how he works on the surface in coming weeks, Miller said. None Above the Law was fourth in the Graduation Stakes for statebreds at 5 1/2 furlongs in his stakes debut on Aug.2. Caisson, the winner of a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds at a mile on turf Saturday, is likely to start in the Juvenile Turf. Trained by Richard Mandella for Sarah Kelly, Caisson ($3.40) was fully extended to win by a nose over Heliochrome. Caisson was fourth as the even-money favorite in a one-mile maiden race July 25, racing greenly through the stretch. “He’s a lot like Omaha Beach,” Mandella said, referring to the four-time stakes winner he trained who was retired to stud last winter. “He’s got a sweet disposition. It took a few races to toughen him up, to get the fight in him.” Caisson, by War Front, was purchased for $340,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling sale. “He’s a big healthy horse,” Mandella said. “I’m hoping we can come right back” in the Juvenile Turf. Kelly is the widow of Jon Kelly, who died on July 25 of cancer at 84. Kelly was a member of Del Mar’s board of directors.
