Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Euros Qualify, Osaila headed to Juvenile Fillies Turf

Randy Goulding|Oct 20, 2014

European-based horses have won the last two editions of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and it has been confirmed that Qualify and Osaila will make the trip from Great Britain to run in the one-mile race on Oct. 31 at Santa Anita.

Qualify, trained by Aidan O’Brien, is coming off a three-length win in the Group 3 CL and MF Weld Park Stakes on Sept. 28 at The Curragh. In a change of tactics, jockey Joseph O’Brien eased her back to last during the early stages of the seven-furlong race.

Qualify was on or near the lead in most of her races prior to her win at The Curragh. Speaking to reporters after the race, Aidan O’Brien said that she has a “massive stride” and that taking her off the pace made a big difference in her performance.

O’Brien was reportedly pointing her to the Group 1 Dubai Fillies Mile last Saturday at Newmarket, but kept her out of the race when the turf came up soft. O’Brien won the Group 1 race with Together Forever.

Osaila, ridden by Frankie Dettori, came from midpack to win the Tattersalls Millions 2-year-old Fillies Trophy on Oct. 4 at Newmarket. Trained by Richard Hannon, Osaila also won the Group 3 Juddmonte Princess Margaret Stakes on July 26 at Ascot prior to finishing fifth in the Group 1 Molyglare Stud on Sept. 14 at The Curragh.

In her second start, Osaila finished fifth in the Group 3 Albany at Ascot. Sunset Glow, trained by Wesley Ward, finished second. Sunset Glow returned to the United States, where she won her next two starts on Del Mar’s Polytrack in the Grade 2 Sorrento and Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante. Daily Racing Form’s Brad Free has Sunset Glow as the early 3-1 favorite in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Casse happy with Conquest Harlanate

Trainer Mark Casse was pleased with how Conquest Harlanate worked five furlongs over the main track Saturday at Churchill Downs. Conquest Harlanate earned an all-expenses-paid berth in the Juvenile Fillies Turf when she won the Grade 2 Natalma on Sept. 12 at Woodbine.

Conquest Harlanate came back with an impressive win in the Grade 3 Mazarine in her next start on Oct. 5. She won the 1 1/16-mile race on Polytrack by 2 1/4 lengths, but her win was accomplished a lot easier than her margin of victory implies. Patrick Husbands has been aboard for all of her races, and he had her well in hand after she made the lead in midstretch of the Mazarine.

“She worked extremely well at Churchill,” Casse said. “It seems like she can run on anything. She was very professional in the Mazarine, and right now, she is just full of confidence.”

Casse said he was planning on shipping her to Santa Anita on Tuesday.
