Callaghan has eye on BC Juvenile Fillies for Donna Veloce

ARCADIA, Calif. – Donna Veloce, the easy winner of a maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies on Saturday, may start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 1.
By Uncle Mo, Donna Veloce led throughout the maiden race and pulled clear in the stretch under jockey Flavien Prat to win by 9 1/4 lengths as a heavy favorite. She ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.22 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 91.
“I was very confident,” trainer Simon Callaghan said on Sunday. “We’ll see how she comes out of it, but we’ll look at the Breeders’ Cup.”

Owned by Kaleem Shah, Donna Veloce was purchased for $800,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of 2-year-olds in training in March.
Sunday, the Callaghan-trained Great Power won his debut in a maiden special weight at 6 1/2 furlongs by 3 1/4 lengths. Ridden by Prat, Great Power was third early and took the lead in early stretch, finishing in 1:17.07.
Callaghan said he plans to point Great Power to the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity at 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 7 and may not give the colt a start in the interim.
“He’s a horse that will get better with time,” Callaghan said in the winner’s circle. “He’s 17 hands and he’s a big baby. We were extremely confident [Saturday], and I thought we’d win today.
“I know he’s a two-turn horse.”
