Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Brown quartet will try to knock off likely favorite Sunset Glow in BC Juvenile Fillies Turf

The $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf looks like a wide-open event, but Sunset Glow deserves to be the favorite in the one-mile race that will have 14 starters.

Trained by Wesley Ward, Sunset Glow was good enough to finish second behind Group 1 winner Cursory Glance in the Grade 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot before returning to the United States where she rattled off consecutive wins in the Grade 2 Sorrento and Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante.

Following her wins at Del Mar, she shipped to Keeneland, where according to Ward she has been training “sensationally.”

The bad news for Ward and Sunset Glow’s owners, Ten Broeck Farm, is that a favorite hasn’t won the six previous renewals of the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Only two, Winter Memories, second at Churchill Downs in 2010, and Laragh, third in the inaugural running at Santa Anita in 2008, finished in the top three.

Last year Vorda never really got involved and finished seventh as the 2-1 favorite.

Given the history of the race, it makes sense to try and beat Sunset Glow.

Trainer Chad Brown has four starters with a chance: Lady Eli, Tammy the Torpedo, Sivoliere, and Partisan Politics. They worked over the turf at Belmont last Sunday, and Brown was pleased with how they accomplished their five-furlong moves around the dogs, especially Lady Eli who worked in company with Tammy the Torpedo.

“It was just more of the same from her,” said Brown of Lady Eli. “She always works like that. They are all doing very well.”

Lady Eli may have worked the best, but Partisan Politics might be a better play at what should be a nice price. Despite a brutal trip in the Miss Grillo, she only got beat by 4 3/4 lengths.

Another horse worth a look is Lady Zuzu, who wasn’t on the radar until she romped in a maiden special weight race on the turf for trainer D. Wayne Lukas at Keeneland on Oct. 9.

Emmynency out with colitis

Her Emmynency was withdrawn from consideration after coming down with colitis Sunday evening.

Trained by Michael Stidham, Her Emmynency finished second to Sunset Glow in the Del Mar Debutante and then ran a huge race to win the $101,750 Surfer Girl in her first try on turf at Santa Anita. She had a real chance of becoming the first California-based horse to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

“She couldn’t have worked any better on Saturday and was coming up to the race perfectly,” said Stidham. “She wasn’t doing well at feed time Sunday, though, and we immediately sent her to the Chino Valley Equine Hospital. The most important thing is she has responded well to treatment.”
