Bricks and Mortar potentially sealed his title as Horse of the Year with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, his fifth Grade 1 win of the year on his fifth different course. By the time the award is presented in late January, he’ll be on the opposite side of the globe preparing to begin his stud career as his travels take him to Shadai Farm in Japan, which struck a deal for his stallion rights over the summer.
Godolphin homebred Thunder Snow, the only two-time winner of the Dubai World Cup, will begin his stallion career at the international operation’s Darley in Japan.
Coolmore’s No Nay Never was Europe’s leading freshman sire of 2018, raising the hopes for other sons of his late sire, Scat Daddy, worldwide – including, of course, Triple Crown winner Justify, who entered stud this season. The sire line now will attempt to bolster its reputation into the next generation, as Group 1 winner Ten Sovereigns enters stud at Coolmore’s Irish base alongside his sire, No Nay Never, for 2020.
Graded stakes winner Demarchelier will become the first son of Dubawi, one of the leading sires in the world, to stand in Kentucky when he enters stud at historic Claiborne Farm.
Grade 1-winning millionaires Preservationist and Divisidero both rewarded the patience their connections took in shaping their careers with multiple high-end wins as older horses. The responsibility for shaping their second careers now falls to Airdrie Stud, which welcomes both to its roster for 2020.
Retired to broodmare duty in Kentucky, It’s Tricky, by Mineshaft, produced just three foals before dying from complications of laminitis in early 2017. Her two foals to make it to the races are both stakes horses for Godolphin, led by multiple graded winner Enticed. He carries on his dam’s legacy by entering stud this season in Darley’s Kentucky stallion barn, alongside his own sire, Medaglia d’Oro.
New York-bred Disco Partner had his brightest performances on the racetrack in his home state, and, fittingly, retires to stud there for 2020. A millionaire and North American track-record setter, Disco Partner will begin a stallion career at Rockridge Stud in Hudson, N.Y., in 2020. He keys a strong incoming hand for the farm, which also welcomes Grade 1 winner Leofric to the roster.
Force the Pass will enter stud in Maryland in 2020, becoming a rare Grade 1 winner to stand in the state. He is the latest newcomer at Louis and Grace Merryman’s Anchor and Hope Farm in Port Deposit, Md., which is continuing to build an exciting roster of young stallions even while rebuilding from a destructive barn fire in August.
It’s college basketball season, and everything in Lexington, Ky., is wallpapered in Wildcat blue. But students from the University of Kentucky could be forgiven for having fond thoughts about an adopted Oklahoma Sooner. Multiple Grade 3 winner Fear the Cowboy, bred and raised by the University of Kentucky’s Maine Chance Farm, which employs students as part of the curriculum, enters stud this season at Glasses Creek Ranch near Madill, Okla.
