Imperial Hint further solidified the notion that he’ll be favored in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint by cruising to victory last Saturday in the Grade 1 Vosburgh at Belmont. Mind Your Biscuits, on the other hand, may have lessened the likelihood that the Sprint will be the Breeders’ Cup race of choice for his connections following a similarly easy romp several hours later at Churchill Downs in the D. Wayne Lukas Classic. But the biggest news in the division this past week could be that another leading Sprint candidate, X Y Jet, has yet to return to the work tab after missing the De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel Park on Sept. 22. Trainer Jorge Navarro said Tuesday he’s taking things “day by day” with the speedy but fragile X Y Jet, who finished second, beaten a head by Mind Your Biscuits, in the Dubai Golden Shaheen in spring. X Y Jet has not started since his easy victory in the Grade 3 Smile Sprint at Gulfstream Park on June 30, and he hasn’t worked since going five furlongs in 59.40 seconds at Monmouth Park on Aug. 27. “He had a curb, we pin-fired it,” said Navarro, who trains X Y Jet for Rockingham Ranch and Gelfenstein Farm. “He’s back in training and open galloped last week. He’s ready to work on Saturday. If the work is good and I think he’ll be ready to go in a few weeks off a couple of workouts, he’ll run in the Sprint. If he makes it, he makes it. Right now, my primary concern is to make sure we do what’s best for the horse.” The final major preps for the Sprint are the Grade 2 Phoenix at Keeneland on Friday and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Saturday. Both events are Breeders’ Cup Challenge races awarding the winner a fees-paid berth in the Sprint. :: Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Results, replays, charts, and more :: Breeders' Cup PP packages: Get PPs, betting strategies, DRF+ Pro access, and more  The Phoenix lured just six starters led by defending race winner Whitmore. His chief competition includes Grade 2 Belmont Sprint winner Limousine Liberal and Promises Fulfilled, the only 3-year-old in the lineup, who like Whitmore became a Grade 1 winner this summer at Saratoga, capturing the seven-furlong H. Allen Jerkens. Heartwood, Dalmore, and Distinctive B complete the field. The Santa Anita Sprint features a rematch between defending champion Roy H and Ransom the Moon. Ransom the Moon was an easy winner when the pair last met on July 28 at Del Mar in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby, drawing away to a 2 1/4-length victory over Roy H, the reigning Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner. Trainer Chad Summers hasn’t ruled out the Sprint for Mind Your Biscuits and said he plans to keep a close eye not only on the results of the Phoenix and the Santa Anita Sprint but also on the status of X Y Jet. “X Y Jet is obviously a brilliantly fast horse, and it took every bit of the long stretch in Dubai to beat him this spring,” said Summers. “But the speed he’d bring to the table in the Sprint would actually be to our advantage considering my horse’s running style.” :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2018: See DRF’s top contenders
