Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Songbird likely to face 9

The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies lost a main player last week in Alcibiades Stakes winner Gomo and picked up several longshots when pre-entries were taken Monday.
A dozen 2-year-old fillies were pre-entered in the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile Fillies, but only 10 are likely to start. Frizette Stakes runner-up Nemoralia, trained by Newmarket-based Jeremy Noseda, and Thrilled, trained by Todd Pletcher, were cross-entered, with the Juvenile Fillies Turf being their first preference. Both fillies are in the body of the Juvenile Fillies Turf field.
Nemoralia and Thrilled have the option of starting in the Juvenile Fillies if their connections choose because the race did not overfill.

Land Over Sea, owned by J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O’Neill, also was pre-entered in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, but her first preference is the Juvenile Fillies. Reddam also is the owner of Gomo, who earned a Win and You’re In berth in the Juvenile Fillies by virtue of her victory in the Grade 1 Alcibiades, but she was found to have an ankle chip and will miss the Breeders’ Cup.
The top three fillies in the Juvenile Fillies are expected to attract the lion’s share of the betting. They are Songbird, who is undefeated and untested in three starts for owner Rick Porter and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer; the 2-for-2 Rachel’s Valentina, who races for Stonestreet Stables and Pletcher; and Tap to It, who was second by a length to Rachel’s Valentina in the Spinaway Stakes for owner Mandy Pope and trainer Ralph Nicks.

Frizette winner Nickname, owned by the LNJ Foxwoods Stable of Larry, Nancy, and Jaime Roth and trained by Steve Asmussen, and Land Over Sea, who was second to Songbird in the Chandelier Stakes, figure as the next betting choices.
Songbird, Rachel’s Valentina, Nickname, and Dothraki Queen, owned by Magdalena Racing and trained by Ken McPeek, all have Win and You’re In berths in the Juvenile Fillies.

Two longshots who jumped into the field at pre-entry time are Forever Darling and Right There. Forever Darling won a Santa Anita maiden race Sept. 26 for trainer Richard Baltas. Right There has finished third, beaten 14 lengths, in the Chandelier, and fourth, beaten 10 lengths, in the Del Mar Debutante for trainer Keith Desormeux.
Trainer Dale Romans said after the Alcibiades, in which he finished third and fourth with Ma Can Do It and Put Da Blame On Me, that he might be back for the Juvenile Fillies. He pre-entered Ma Can Do It, who finished a solid third over a sloppy track in the Alcibiades despite being a maiden.
