Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies: Concave to train up to race

Mary Rampellini|Sep 16, 2013
Concave, Sorrento Stakes
Benoit & Associates Concave, winner of the Grade 2 Sorrento, will train up to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Concave will train up to the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 2, according to trainer Doug O’Neill. The winner of last month’s Grade 2 Sorrento at Del Mar, she was a closing third in the track’s Grade 1 Debutante in her most recent start Aug. 31.

“She’ll go right to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies,” O’Neill said. “We’re going to go into it fresh and ready to roll. She’s had a good campaign in a short period of time, and we thought we’d put her away and save her energy for the big one.”

Concave is a winner of 2 of 3 starts, with all of her races coming at Del Mar. She won her debut in a maiden special weight at five furlongs on turf July 12 and then won the Sorrento on Aug 7. Concave rallied for a half-length win, defeating eventual Del Mar Debutante winner She’s a Tiger.

Concave will be making her two-turn debut in the BC Juvenile Fillies.

“She’s got such a great mind,” O’Neill said. “We’re very excited about her future as a two-turn horse.”

The Reddam Racing-owned Concave is a daughter of Colonel John, winner of the Santa Anita Derby and Travers in 2008.

Plans pending for Stonetastic, City by the Bay

Stonetastic is a “possibility” for the BC Juvenile Fillies, trainer Kelly Breen said Monday, but her path to the race is still being determined. Stonetastic last raced Sept. 7 and was second by a half-length in the Grade 2 Pocahontas at Churchill Downs. She was the favorite in the 1 1/16-mile race following her 12-length debut win at Monmouth Park on Aug. 10. Breen said next-race plans for Stonetastic have yet to be determined. She is based at Monmouth.

Plans also are pending for City by the Bay, who pushed her record to 2 for 2 with a dazzling, 8 3/4-length win in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante at Fairplex on Saturday. She began to separate herself from the field on the second turn of the 6 1/2-furlong race.

“Our short term goal was the Barretts,” trainer Bill Morey said. “We didn’t look past that going into this race, and we got that done, thanks to her talent. We’re letting her rest a couple of days and have not made plans for her next race.

“I don’t think at this point the Breeders’ Cup is a possibility.”

* Sweet Reason on Monday had her first work since her Spinaway romp in the slop Sept. 1, breezing a half-mile in 48.60 seconds at Belmont Park. The move came on a fast track, and it ranked seventh of 30.

* Tea Time earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 90 – fourth-fastest for a 2-year-old filly so far this year – for a maiden special weight win at Belmont on Sunday. Michael Matz trains the daughter of Pulpit, who covered six furlongs in 1:09.40
