Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies analysis

ANGELA RENEE and CONQUEST ECLIPSE were one-two in the Chandelier, the at-the-distance, over-the-track prep for this and the prep that seemed the strongest. Angela Renee raised her game in the Chandelier in her first opportunity to go two turns, which she had a license to do given her distance-oriented pedigree. Conquest Eclipse chased gamely in her first route attempt and really isn’t that far off her rival. MAJESTIC PRESENCE finished fourth in the Chandelier but was at least four wide around the track. She can be closer with a better trip. TOP DECILE stretched out off a debut maiden win to be a sharp second in the Alcibiades. She took advantage of a pace collapse in that race but has promise. WONDER GAL is the one I’d want out of the Frizette. She was on the rail much of the way, which might have been the worst part of the track.

CONQUEST ECLIPSE was fairly close early, lost position through the middle stages, rallied into the stretch, and galloped out impressively past the wire when a clear second in the Chandelier as the 2-1 choice; projects to be closer to the pace after being sharpened with two fast works afterward. ANGELA RENEE spun her wheels over a freshly rain-soaked Spa strip in the Spinaway with blinkers on and bounced back nicely to beat Conquest Eclipse in her first start going long; nicely drawn and an obvious threat. CRISTINA’S JOURNEY was never headed in two Kentucky starts, and her first Santa Anita work was a bullet ranked 1/83; she is probably looking to clear for the lead drawn inside pace foes TAKE CHARGE BRANDI and HENNYTHELOVEPENNY. A contested pace could benefit the rail-drawn stalker FEATHERED, whose Frizette third in the slop behind BY THE MOON and WONDER GAL can be excused.

The first Breeders' Cup race of the day is the Juvenile Fillies, an inscrutable bunch this season. Lightly raced TOP DECILE is intriguing at a price. She won her sprint debut up front, then rallied from off the pace and finished second in a Grade 1 route. That was the Alcibiades, where she was blocked into the lane before rallying in traffic to miss by half-length. It was a big try by a lightly raced filly with much potential. She epitomizes the opportunities on Breeders' Cup day - good horses at big prices. MAJESTIC PRESENCE was wide and needed the start last time in the G1 Chandelier. Good works since, and there should be a lively pace to run at. ANGELA RENEE has a G1 win over the track and a pedigree to be any kind by Bernardini and a half to G1 winner To Honor and Serve. Angela Renee is a special filly. PUCA won by 16 on "good" at Belmont. It was mud, and she sure ran fast. If she runs the same on fast she is an obvious threat. TAKE CHARGE BRANDI should be involved early at a big price for D. Wayne Lukas who has fired at prices in the Breeders' Cup. 'Brandi' is 30-1.
