Breeders' Cup 2026: Classic matchup has potential to be one for the ages

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Breeders’ Cup returning to Keeneland for the fourth time conjures up images of some of the most memorable moments in the 42-year history of the event.

In 2015, there was American Pharoah, racing’s first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, running away with the Classic by 6 1/2 lengths to complete what has become known as racing’s Grand Slam.

In 2022, there was Flightline taking off in the stretch under Flavien Prat to win the Classic by 8 1/4 lengths capping a brilliant, if all too brief, career with his sixth win from as many starts.

The 43rd Classic, to be run at 6:16 p.m. Eastern as the last of nine Breeders’ Cup events on Saturday, following the five that were to be run Friday, has the potential to be equally as compelling. It features a showdown between champions Forever Young, last year’s Classic winner, and Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year who had to be scratched from the 2025 Classic due to a fever.

Sovereignty is owned by Godolphin, which has doubled down in its bid to win its first Classic by also entering Knightsbridge, a fascinating horse whose last two starts – both around two turns – have been brilliant. The presence of Golden Tempo, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner, means this will be the first time two Derby winners have met in the Classic since 1991, when Unbridled, the 1990 Derby winner, finished third and Strike the Gold, the 1991 Derby winner, was fifth.

Forever Young is one 10 previous Breeders’ Cup winners – seven from last year – who are back seeking another trophy. Ethical Diamond (Turf), Notable Speech (Mile), and Shisospicy (Turf Sprint) are seeking to win the same race they did last year. The eight horses in the Distaff, following the scratch of Scottish Lassie, include three previous BC winners – Splendora (2025 Filly and Sprint), Super Corredora (2025 Juvenile Fillies), and Immersive (2024 Juvenile Fillies).

Trainer Brad Cox would love to have a repeat of the 2020 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland when he won four of the 14 championship races, including the Distaff with Monomoy Girl. He won the Juvenile Fillies Turf and Juvenile on Friday, the Dirt Mile and Distaff on Saturday

“It was surreal to win four of them over a two-day span, that was just incredible,” said Cox, who, after sending out three runners Friday, had Further Ado (Dirt Mile) and Bless the Broken and Stellify (Filly and Mare Turf) to run Saturday. “They’re incredibly tough to come by. You never lose track of how many you’ve won, or I haven’t.”

For the record, Cox is 11 for 44 in the Breeders’ Cup.

“They’re very tough to win,” Cox said. “The preparation, there’s months and months and sometimes even years of preparation goes into trying to get these horses here and having them at their best and it all playing out the way you need it to, the way you want it to.”

Across the way from where Cox has his horses stabled, trainer Ethan West had a hold of Chunk of Gold’s shank as he grazed outside the barn. Chunk of Gold gave West his first Kentucky Derby starter last year and now represents his first-ever Breeders’ Cup starter in Saturday’s Dirt Mile, where he’ll face Further Ado, the favorite trained by Cox.

“These are the championships, the best of the best of the world, not just your best 3-year-olds,” West said. “He’s taken us on an awesome ride, and I think he deserves a shot against this bunch.”

Taking a shot. Making a memory. It’s what the Breeders’ Cup is about.
