Big City Lights, Forbidden Kingdom work out

Steve Andersen|Aug 19, 2022
Big City Lights wins the Real Good Deal Stakes on Aug 5 2022
Benoit Photo Unbeaten Big City Lights, winner of the Aug. 5 Real Good Deal Stakes in his first start for Richard Mandella, breezed a half-mile at Del Mar on Friday.

The undefeated colt Big City Lights and Forbidden Kingdom, the winner of two Grade 2 stakes earlier this year at Santa Anita, worked for upcoming stakes at Del Mar on Friday for trainer Richard Mandella.

Big City Lights, the winner of the Real Good Deal Stakes for California-bred 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 5 in his third start, worked a half-mile in 48.40 seconds. Mandella said the $125,000 Shared Belief Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile at Del Mar on Sept. 3 or the $75,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes for statebred milers at Los Alamitos on Sept. 17, are under consideration.

Either race would be the first start around two turns for Big City Lights.

Forbidden Kingdom, last of six as the favorite in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in April, officially worked three furlongs in 37.40 seconds, although Mandella timed the colt in a much faster 34.40 seconds.

Forbidden Kingdom is being prepared for the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship at six furlongs on Oct. 1.

A winner of 3 of 6 starts, Forbidden Kingdom was diagnosed with a swollen throat after the Santa Anita Derby and was briefly out of training in June after a bout of colic.

Forbidden Kingdom won the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs and the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles in consecutive starts in February and March.
