Belmont Stakes shortened, will be run June 20; 40-stakes meet begins June 3

The Belmont Stakes, traditionally the last and longest leg of Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, will be run June 20 and at the shortened distance of 1 1/8 miles around one turn, the New York Racing Association announced Tuesday. That means the Belmont – typically run at 1 1/2 miles five weeks after the Kentucky Derby – will be run 11 weeks before the Kentucky Derby (Sept. 5) and 15 weeks before the Preakness (Oct. 3).

King: Don't automatically toss a trainer's longer-priced second entrant

King: Don't automatically toss a trainer's longer-priced second entrant

When Sir Winston upset last Saturday's Belmont Stakes at odds of 10-1, beating nine rivals, including stablemate and Preakness winner War of Will, a 7-2 shot, it served as a reminder that sometimes the larger-priced of a trainer's two entrants in a race is the one you want, particularly in major stakes races.

Eclipse Award up for grabs as second half of 3-year-old season begins

Nearly six months in, the race for the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male is about as wide open as it was on New Year's Day, setting the stage for a compelling second half of the season, with races like the Travers and Pennsylvania Derby looming large.

Sir Winston, Tacitus, War of Will circle Travers Day on calendar

Trainer Mark Casse on Sunday morning was still trying to wrap his head around the conflicted feelings he had following the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, which he won with Sir Winston while seeing War of Will, his Preakness winner, beat one horse.

Belmont Stakes 2019 handle sets record for non-Triple Crown year

Belmont Stakes 2019 handle sets record for non-Triple Crown year

Total handle on the Belmont Stakes on Saturday was far short of the wagering totals for the race last year, when a Triple Crown was on the line, but the figure compared more than favorably to the last time the race was run without the additional attention from a Triple Crown try in 2017, according to charts of the races.

Watchmaker: Belmont result leaves no clear leader among 3-year-old males

Watchmaker: Belmont result leaves no clear leader among 3-year-old males

July 20. Aug. 24. Sept. 21. Nov. 2. Those are the respective dates of the Haskell, Travers, Pennsylvania Derby, and Breeders’ Cup Classic. And those are the dates and races that will, in all probability, determine the champion 3-year-old male of 2019 after Sir Winston’s upset of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park brought down the curtain on an odd and somewhat unsatisfying (if you’re not trainer Mark Casse) Triple Crown season.
