Rhetorical loves the added ground, takes Turf Classic on the front end

Rhetorical loves the added ground, takes Turf Classic on the front end

The 5-year-old gelding Rhetorical had made eight starts before Saturday. He’d won five of them, won the Grade 1 Turf Mile at Keeneland last fall, finished a solid fourth at Del Mar in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. What Rhetorical had never done before the Turf Classic at Churchill Downs was race on the lead. That’s where he and Irad Ortiz Jr. found themselves two jumps out of the starting gate. Amermans, McCarthy make the right call as Stark Contrast dominates American Turf

Amermans, McCarthy make the right call as Stark Contrast dominates American Turf

Six weeks ago, trainer Michael McCarthy saddled Stark Contrast to finish a good second in the Ruby after missing a prep race. The 50 points he earned would have put him in the Kentucky Derby. The decision paid off, as Stark Contrast, already a proven stakes performer, is now a Grade 1 winner, easily holding sway by 2 1/4 lengths over a belatedly-closing Remember Mamba on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
