Trainer stats don’t always tell us if a horse is more likely to outrun its odds or be overbet. Typically, a trainer might have a win rate of between 12 and 18 percent and a return on investment in the $1.50 to $1.80 range for the angles that apply to the horse entered. But occasionally certain trainers have what I like to call a “power move,” an angle where they have been markedly more successful than their baseline. Today’s column will just look at a handful of “Bet This” moves in this area.

Vercingetorix, away since April, returned to the races with a two-length win over True Story in the Group 2, $200,000 Al Rashidiya Stakes on Thursday night at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The comeback run suggests that the South African-bred could be a force in the more important middle-distance turf races in February and March.

Leave the Light On, the winner of the Remsen Stakes in his last start, injured a hind ankle in a workout last weekend, needs surgery, and is off the Triple Crown trail, trainer Chad Brown said Thursday.

Kaigun and jockey Corey Nakatani had the perfect first outing in the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar on Nov. 28. On Saturday, Nakatani will have high expectations when he rides Kaigun in the $200,000 Arcadia Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas is well versed in bringing out a champion, having trained 26 of them in his Hall of Fame career. Lukas’ latest is Take Charge Brandi, who will launch her 3-year-old season Saturday in the $100,000 Martha Washington at Oaklawn Park.

Testa Rossi kicked off her 2014 campaign with a decisive win over the Tampa Bay Downs turf course in the Grade 3 Florida Oaks, and her connections are hoping she will follow suit in her 2015 debut as the French-bred star tops a solid field of 14 older fillies and mares entered in Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Endeavour Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.
