Trainer stats don’t always tell us if a horse is more likely to outrun its odds or be overbet. Typically, a trainer might have a win rate of between 12 and 18 percent and a return on investment in the $1.50 to $1.80 range for the angles that apply to the horse entered. But occasionally certain trainers have what I like to call a “power move,” an angle where they have been markedly more successful than their baseline. Today’s column will just look at a handful of “Bet This” moves in this area. Let’s take a look at a few successful but lower-profile trainers who race at some of the major circuits in North America. These are trainers that might be overlooked by many horseplayers, but they all have one thing in common - they all have a power move. DRF Formulator gives you full access to all of a trainer’s runners over the past five years, allowing you to analyze patterns and unearth angles that have succeeded in the past, and at the bottom of this article you’ll find a code to try Formulator to find your own betting opportunities. ** Bet This: James Cassidy following a maiden win. James Cassidy generally wins at a low rate and returns a low ROI, going 91 for 880 (10 percent) and a $1.33 ROI with all runners over the past five years. In the start following a maiden victory, though, Cassidy excels. He’s 37-10-8-3 with a $4.46 ROI with those runners, nearly tripling his win rate with all runners, nearly doubling how often his horses hit the board, and more than tripling his ROI. Also, it’s worth mentioning that these runners all offer a positive ROI regardless of distance or surface over the past five years. ** Bet This: Kelly Breen sprint to route on dirt. Kelly Breen is an East Coast trainer who wins at an above-average rate and returns a fair ROI with all runners (18 percent and $1.60 over the past five years). Most of that damage comes on dirt, where his numbers jump to 21 percent and $1.78. But when he stretches out from a sprint to a route, he excels, going 82-25-14-10 with a $2.74 ROI over the past five years, regardless of the racetrack or class level. ** Bet This: Jeremiah Englehart blinks on or off in dirt routes. Englehart is a high percentage/low ROI trainer based in New York. The bulk of his runners have started at Finger Lakes over the past five years. There, he’s won at a 28 percent rate in that time, returning a $1.74 ROI from 1,348 starters. On the NYRA circuit, his win rate is half that (14 percent), but his ROI actually improves to $1.88 from 486 runners. But Englehart has a power move, one that has been amazingly successful over the past five years. When he adds or removes blinkers in dirt routes, the numbers are impressive. He’s 19-6-5-0 with a $5.80 ROI when he adds blinks, including Ria Antonia’s $66 shocker in the BC Juvenile Fillies, and he’s 10-6-0-0 with a $3.00 ROI when he removes them. Combined, that’s 29-12-5-0 and a $4.83 ROI when he adds or removes blinkers in dirt routes. Power move! ** Bet This: Peter Eurton with no tag following a maiden win. As a horseplayer, I like to call Peter Eurton a vanilla trainer. He has a solid win rate and an average ROI with nearly every angle. With all runners the past five years, he has won 15 percent of the time, has been in the money nearly 50 percent of the time, and has an ROI of just over $1.50 from nearly 1,000 runners. He’s the kind of trainer you love as a horse owner, but that kind of consistency can frustrate a horseplayer. He’s so consistent that he’s a difficult trainer to lean on or to toss. But in the start following a maiden win, Eurton’s numbers improve to 19 percent and $2.22 ROI (9 wins in 48 starts). However, it is worth noting that every one of those nine wins following a maiden victory has come with a horse who was not entered for a tag. If you dig deeper, you’ll see that Eurton is 17-0-1-3 over the past five years when he enters a horse for a tag following his  maiden win, and he’s a remarkable 32-9-6-1 with a $3.34 ROI when he does not offer the horse for a tag after his maiden win. ** Bet This: Eddie Plesa Jr. going turf to dirt with maidens. Eddie Plesa Jr. is a trainer based at Monmouth Park in the summer and South Florida in the winner. He’s had more than 2,000 starts over the past five years, winning 18 percent (384 for 2124) for a $1.80 ROI. Almost 70 percent of his wins have come on dirt over the past five years, and when Plesa moves maidens from turf to dirt, it has proven to be a solid play. Over the past two years, he’s 17-8-0-5 with a $4.60 ROI going turf to dirt with maidens, including winners at 8-1 and 15-1. These are just a few examples of great bets to target. Every day, at every track, you will find many examples of these kinds of great (or awful) opportunities. DRF Formulator gives you the keys to find these angles, and it could very well lead you to a winner that is overlooked by much of the betting public.
