Matabari, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2013, won Sunday’s $169,800 Los Alamitos Winter Championship, beating Moonist, the champion 3-year-old of 2014.

A field of just eight 3-year-olds, led by Holy Bull Stakes winner Upstart, was drawn Monday for Saturday’s $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes. The Grade 2, 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth is the last of eight stakes on Saturday’s card, which also features the 2015 debut of the multiple Eclipse Award winner Main Sequence in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida.

On Monday, 10 3-year-olds were entered in the Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds. The Risen Star is a second-tier qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby, offering 85 points distributed on a 50-20-10-5 basis to the top four finishers. Win on Saturday, and you’re in the 20-horse Derby.

Bayern, who has not started since winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November, resumed serious training with a three-furlong workout in 36.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday.
