Bob Baffert will be on hand Saturday night at Churchill Downs to pick up his engraved trophy for winning the Kentucky Derby six weeks beforehand with American Pharoah. While he’s at it, Baffert just might be picking up another Grade 1 trophy when he sends out Hoppertunity and Cat Burglar in the $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap.
Owner-breeder Thomas McClay is well-positioned for a big night at Penn National Race Course on Friday. McClay has three of the eight 3-year-old fillies in the $75,000 New Start Stakes and fast debut winner Amplified in the $75,000 Danzig Stakes for 3-year-olds. Both stakes are restricted to Pennsylvania-breds and will be contested at six furlongs.
Cocked and Loaded returned to training Wednesday at Arlington for the first time since winning the $246,000 Tremont Stakes on Friday at Belmont Park, and he could return to New York for the Sanford Stakes on July 25 at Saratoga.
