The sharp New York invader Don’t Be So Salty held off a charging Greatest Game to take the $125,000 Display Stakes for 2-year-olds Sunday, closing day at Woodbine.
Trainer Phil D’Amato scratched Coppa from the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar on Saturday and will point her to the $300,000 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos on Dec. 12. D'Amato also plans to run the stakes-placed filly Street Fancy in the Starlet.
Grade 1 winner Mr Speaker has been retired from racing and will debut at stud in 2016 at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., for an advertised fee of $10,000.
What a difference a year makes. Last November, Loki’s Vengeance finished sixth of nine in the Thunder Rumble division of the New York Stallion Stakes at Aqueduct. On Sunday, despite facing four of the same rivals he did that day, Loki’s Vengeance turned the tables and recorded a half-length victory in the $125,000 stakes restricted to progeny of New York-based stallions.
For the third straight year, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin can leave New York in the fall following the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct, head to south Florida for the winter, and dream about Kentucky in the spring.
MOHAYMEN completed a terrific 2-year-old campaign by remaining unbeaten with this victory, in which he got a career-best Beyer Speed Figure while racing two turns for the first time and using Lasix for the first time. He is living up to every bit of his $2.2 million purchase price as a yearling, and he certainly does not appear to have reached his ceiling yet.
