Simon: Routing in top company yields racing's best purses

The money and glory is in running long. That's what the purse structure in North America says, and the American Graded Stakes Committee tells a similar story by the way it awards grades to stakes. If you're an owner who wants to win a lot of money, get a horse that can perform at their best in races at a mile or longer. If you're an owner who wants to win graded stakes, you really better have a horse that can run at the top level in races at a mile or longer.

Path of David scores as heavy favorite in Eddie Logan

Path of David’s flashy maiden win at Del Mar in November made him the even-money favorite to win Thursday’s $79,250 Eddie Logan Stakes on turf at Santa Anita. He more than lived up to expectations, rallying from eighth of 10 to win the one-mile race by a length over 6-1 Imperious One and leaving jockey Joe Talamo impressed with the performance.

Bayerd, Marchman watching weather ahead of Bonapaw

The first thing to handicap in the $60,000 Bonapaw Stakes on Saturday at Fair Grounds is the weather. The Bonapaw is carded for 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, but a rainy spell had, as of Thursday, moved turf races to dirt for a week straight, and showers are forecast through Saturday in New Orleans. Twelve were entered in the Bonapaw, a very strong group considering the purse level, but the field could come close to being halved if the race winds up on dirt.
