Countdown to the Crown returns for a seventh season online as one of the most comprehensive handicapper’s scouting reports of the 3-year-old scene. Posted each Friday at DRF.com from Jan. 6 through the Belmont Stakes, Countdown keeps you apprised of the rising stars of the 3-year-old class from the maiden ranks through the Grade 1 stakes.
Saturday’s national stakes schedule is a busy one. Santa Anita’s Grade 2, $150,000 San Fernando is the highest ranked and richest race in the country, but Gulfstream Park offers a pair of Grade 3, $100,000 events, the Hal’s Hope (which marks the return of Jackson Bend) and the Fort Lauderdale. Paul Shurman, a 57-year-old attorney from Dix Hills, N.Y., will go into the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship finals Jan. 27-28 in Las Vegas as the 2011 Daily Racing Form NHC Tour champion.

It would be hard to find a more attractive maiden sprint than race 9 on Saturday. The good field of statebred fillies includes first-time starter Ez Effort, by the win-early stallion In Excess and out of a dam that produced three debut winners already (Ez Dreamer, Top Debutante, and Uh Oh Bango).
Sweet Seventeen should like stretching out to two turns on the inner track, I like her inside draw, and the rush-up speed she showed in her first two starts suggests she could be a speed presence in Saturday's Busanda at Aqueduct, a race that doesn’t have a lot of pace.
