2011 Kentucky Derby: Who's hot, who's not for April 7

Jay Privman|Apr 07, 2011
Shackleford
Tom Keyser Shackleford joined the top 20 of Derby Watch after his second-place finish in the Florida Derby.

WHO’S HOT

Nehro, second in the Louisiana Derby two weeks ago, and Shackleford, who was a courageous second in last Sunday’s Florida Derby, are the two newcomers to this week’s top 20 of Derby Watch. Nehro was a late addition, added Thursday when Premier Pegasus came off the list owing to the cannon-bone fracture that ends his Derby dream.

WHO’S NOT

Premier Pegasus is the most prominent defection. He was the morning-line favorite for Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby. To make room for Shackleford, Stay Thirsty was dropped after his poor performance in the Florida Derby. But be mindful that there is still a decent chance that Stay Thirsty will make the Derby field, and Shackleford won’t, because of graded stakes earnings.

ON THE BUBBLE

A horse like Toby’s Corner could leap onto the list if he were to somehow pull off an upset against Uncle Mo in the Wood Memorial. Caleb’s Posse and Nehro, both scheduled for next week’s Arkansas Derby, also are knocking on the barn door.
