Affirmed and Alydar arrived at Pimlico in 1978 more familiar to each other than Burns and Allen. They'd already met seven times, six as 2-year-olds and then in the Kentucky Derby, where Affirmed defeated Alydar for the fourth time. But like old age and taxes, Alydar just kept coming, and there was even a moment midway in the Pimlico stretch when it looked as if it might be Alydar’s day. Still, Affirmed won by a neck. NEXT >>
