Preakness 2022: Sunday workout to determine Shake Em Loose's next start

James Duley/Maryland Jockey Club
Claimed for $16,000 by owner-trainer Rudy Sanchez-Salomon in November, Shake Em Loose made a sustained bid to win the Private Terms Stakes. The Federico Tesio is next up.

The status of potential Preakness entrant Shake Em Loose will likely be determined following the gelding’s scheduled workout at Laurel Park on Sunday morning.

Reached by telephone on Saturday, trainer Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon mentioned that Shake Em Loose will breeze five furlongs on turf, possibly in company with stablemate Can the Queen, a 6-year-old mare best known for winning the Sensible Lady Turf Dash last summer at Pimlico. Can the Queen finished fourth against males in the King T. Leatherbury Stakes at Laurel on April 23.

Preakness 2022: Early Voting gets final work; Zandon unlikely to enter

Barbara D. Livingston
Early Voting (right), finishing second in the Wood Memorial, could possibly be held out of Derby consideration in favor of running two weeks later in the Preakness.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The comparisons between Early Voting and Cloud Computing are natural and meaningful and are among the main storylines heading into next Saturday’s $1.5 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.

Trainer Chad Brown and owner Seth Klarman hope the comparisons are equally as natural and meaningful coming out of Preakness 147.

Derby winner Rich Strike will skip Preakness

Debra A. Romo
Owner Rick Dawson and trainer Eric Reed have decided to bypass the Preakness with longshot Derby winner Rich Strike (right).

Rich Strike pulled off an 80-1 upset in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, and on Thursday his connections came with another shocker, taking the colt out of consideration for the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, on May 21 at Pimlico. He will instead await the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, on June 11 in New York.

Both Rick Dawson, who owns Rich Strike, and Eric Reed, the colt’s trainer, said they believed running back in two weeks was not in the best interests of Rich Strike. They said giving him five weeks between starts was more suitable.

Preakness 2022: Rich Strike will be in the 8-1 range for second leg of Triple Crown

Barbara Livingston
Rich Strike galloped Wednesday at Mercury training center, ships to Churchill Downs on Thursday, and then will be vanned to Pimlico, possibly on Monday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rich Strike won’t be 80-1 in the Preakness like he was in winning the Kentucky Derby – but he won’t be among the program favorites, either. Pimlico oddsmaker Keith Feustle said this week that Rich Strike will be 8-1 “or maybe even a touch higher” on his morning line, depending on who’s in and who’s out when entries are drawn Monday for the May 21 Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore.

“From the public’s perspective, I think Rich Strike will fall through the cracks again a little, even as the Derby winner,” Feustle said.

Preakness: Velazquez takes mount on Simplification

Deb Roma
Jose Ortiz rode Simplification (above) to a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, but he is committed to Early Voting for the Preakness.

With Jose Ortiz committed to ride Early Voting, John Velazquez has picked up the mount on Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher Simplification in the May 21 Preakness Stakes, trainer Antonio Sano said Monday.

“Johnny V’s a good jockey, a good person, has experience,” Sano said Monday. “I’m so happy to have Johnny on the horse.”

Simplification was scheduled leave Kentucky for Baltimore on Monday night.

Velazquez rode Messier to a 15th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. Messier is not running in the Preakness.

Joseph sending in 16 horses; Skippylongstocking to Preakness or Peter Pan

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Skippylongstocking wins in early March at Gulfstream. He has 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points after his third-place finish in the Wood Memorial.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. combined to win 13 races from 40 starters at Belmont Park’s two meets in 2021 and he will again have a presence in New York this summer as he plans to have 16 horses based here for the spring/summer meet that begins Thursday.

Among the group that will ultimately be here is Skippylongstocking, the third-place finisher in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 9. Skippylongstocking is scheduled to have his first work since the Wood on Friday at Gulfstream Park.

Scrambled sales calendar turned out to be a break for Fradkins, owner-breeders of Rombauer

Barbara D. Livingston
Had John and Diane Fradkin entered Rombauer in an OBS sale last year as originally planned, they probably would not be the owners and breeders of a Preakness winner.

The global coronavirus pandemic turned life, including the Thoroughbred racing and sales calendar, upside down in 2020. But the shuffling of the sales calendar actually played out in favor of the small breeding program of John and Diane Fradkin.

The Fradkins had planned to offer for sale their homebred Rombauer, but the auction he was intended for was postponed. As a result, they campaigned Rombauer, and on Saturday he won the Preakness Stakes.

Preakness 2021: Dirt? No problem for Rombauer, who now points to Belmont Stakes

Emily Shields
Rombauer's triumph in Saturday's Preakness Stakes at Pimlico was his first on dirt.

BALTIMORE - Though the first two victories of Rombauer’s career came on turf and synthetic, there was never any doubt in trainer Michael McCarthy’s mind the colt would be successful on dirt as well.

Rombauer’s first start on dirt resulted in a second-place finish in the Grade 1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita last September. Subsequent starts in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Blue Grass Stakes - while both defeats at Keeneland - also gave McCarthy reasons for optimism.

Preakness 2021 post-race analysis

Barbara D. Livingston
Rombauer leads the field down the stretch en route to victory in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday.

For the second time of the last four that the Preakness has been run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, a fresh horse proved best. This time it was ROMBAUER, who got the pace duel he craves compared to what unfolded in his prior start, the Blue Grass, resulting in an 11-1 upset Saturday at Pimlico.

He got a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 102 for the victory.
