Justify was chased home by 19 horses in the Kentucky Derby on May 5 at Churchill Downs, but when he lines up for the Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico it appears as few as seven will try to stop him from sweeping the Triple Crown.
Justify was chased home by 19 horses in the Kentucky Derby on May 5 at Churchill Downs, but when he lines up for the Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico it appears as few as seven will try to stop him from sweeping the Triple Crown.
When it comes to the Preakness, John Servis and Chuck Zacney have been there, done that – just not lately. Between them, they took down four of the six legs of the Triple Crown in 2004 and 2005.
Servis trained 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones on behalf of the Someday Farm of Roy and Pat Chapman. Zacney’s Cash Is King Stable owned Afleet Alex, who accounted for the following season’s Preakness and Belmont Stakes under the direction of trainer Tim Ritchey.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Some great trainer-jockey friendships have been forged while teaming together on America’s racetracks. Charlie Whittingham and Bill Shoemaker. Bill Mott and Jerry Bailey. Woody Stephens and Eddie Maple. Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez.
Bolt d'Oro, 12th in the Kentucky Derby, will not run in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico and will instead be pointed to the $1.2 million Met Mile on the Belmont Stakes card June 9, owner-trainer Mick Ruis said Sunday morning.
Ruis said he wants to do "the best for Bolt, as much as I would love to run in the Preakness."
He said Bolt d'Oro is "doing great and looks fantastic." He has been training at Keeneland the past week with Ruis's Kentucky-based assistant, Austin Trites.
ELMONT, N.Y. - The rematch is set.
Good Magic, second to Justify in the Kentucky Derby on May 5, will take on that rival again in Saturday’s $1.5 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. Trainer Chad Brown, who had been hinting at running Good Magic in the Preakness since Thursday, confirmed him as a starter on Sunday after the colt galloped 1 3/8 miles over Belmont Park’s main track.
Javier Castellano will ride Diamond King in the Preakness Stakes, trainer John Servis confirmed Saturday morning.
Castellano takes over the mount from Frankie Pennington, who has won the last four riding championships at Parx Racing and has won five titles overall at the Bensalem, Pa., track where Diamond King is based.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Chad Brown appears to be more enthusiastic about starting Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic in next Saturday’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.
After watching Good Magic gallop a solid 1 1/4 miles Friday over the Belmont Park main track, Brown stopped just short of committing last year’s 2-year-old male champion to the second jewel of Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown and a rematch with Derby winner Justify. Brown did say that if Good Magic runs in the Preakness, he would van to Baltimore on Monday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – While the Kentucky Derby was nearly a week ago, the focus is still squarely on the Bluegrass State as runners prepare for the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes on May 19 at Pimlico in Baltimore. The majority of the prospective field, led by Kentucky Derby winner Justify, is currently based at either Churchill Downs or Keeneland.
Over the years, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has called the Preakness Stakes the easiest of the three Triple Crown races to win, and he would know, having won the race six times, all since 1997.
The race has been a trickier nut to crack for bettors. Even when Kentucky Derby form has held up for the top spot in the Preakness, it has been a different story recently for the minor awards. One merely need think back to when eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah was followed across the wire by 28-1 longshot Tale of Verve in the 2015 Preakness for a lasting example.
