Kentucky Derby winner Authentic pleases Baffert with five-furlong work for Preakness

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Authentic was sent through his first breeze on Saturday since winning the Kentucky Derby, going five furlongs in 59.20 seconds at a chilly Churchill Downs.

With his Hall of Fame trainer, Bob Baffert, watching frontside, Authentic was ridden by Martin Garcia when working over a fast track shortly after 9 a.m. Eastern. According to Churchill clocker John Nichols, the Into Mischief colt went in splits of 23.80 and 35.40 before proceeding in out times of 1:12.20 and 1:25.20.

Tiz the Law still in recovery mode

ELMONT, N.Y. – In a perfect world, Tiz the Law, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, would likely have breezed this weekend toward a potential start in the Preakness.

In the real world, Tiz the Law has been slow to bounce back from the Derby and is not expected to breeze until mid-week at the earliest, trainer Barclay Tagg said Friday.

Mr. Big News sharp in first post-Derby breeze

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Mr. Big News was sent through his first serious work since finishing third in the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby when breezing a half-mile in 48.80 seconds early Friday over a fast Churchill surface. The Giant’s Causeway colt is one of about a dozen early prospects for the Oct. 3 Preakness at Pimlico.

Trainer Bret Calhoun said Mr. Big News “was very sharp” in what was intended to be something of a maintenance work.

“We were only looking for a half in about 50, but he was full of energy and galloped out great,” said Calhoun.

Fast work propels Liveyourbeastlife into Preakness

ELMONT, N.Y. – Liveyourbeastlife, runner-up in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy, worked five furlongs in 59.97 seconds Thursday morning at Belmont Park, after which trainer Jorge Abreu confirmed the 3-year-old son of Ghostzapper would be supplemented to the $1 million Preakness on Oct. 3 at Pimlico.

Because he is not Triple Crown nominated, Liveyourbeastlife would have to be supplemented to the Preakness for a $25,000 fee. Abreu said owner William Lawrence has indicated a willingness to do that.

Pimlico sets Preakness week coronavirus protocols for jockeys

Jockeys who intend to ride at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore during the upcoming three-day Preakness Stakes meet will need to get tested at the track for coronavirus 72 hours prior to being allowed to ride, according to protocols the track has distributed to riders and their agents.

Preakness: The filly Swiss Skydiver might join the party

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Swiss Skydiver is under serious consideration for a run against male rivals in the Oct. 3 Preakness at Pimlico, although trainer Ken McPeek said there are other options for the star 3-year-old filly.

“I’d say we’re maybe 50-50 at this point,” McPeek said early Wednesday. “We’ve talked to the people at Pimlico and we’ll be keeping a pretty close eye on who else is planning to run.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Authentic has returned to training at Churchill Downs as the 2020 Kentucky Derby winner now sets his sights on the Oct. 3 Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore.

Authentic and his Bob Baffert-trained stablemate Thousand Words both are stabled in Barn 44 of the Churchill backstretch with D. Wayne Lukas. Both are galloping each morning with Lukas and his longtime assistant, Bas Nicholl, overseeing them.

Tiz the Law's Preakness status still undecided

ELMONT, N.Y. – The much anticipated decision regarding Tiz the Law’s starting status for the Preakness will not be made for at least another several days. It’s a decision, trainer Barclay Tagg and his assistant Robin Smullen agreed, that will basically be made by Tiz the Law himself.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Art Collector, who missed the Kentucky Derby with a minor foot injury, breezed a half-mile in company in 49 seconds on Saturday at the Skylight training center. Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. was aboard the colt, whose four 2020 starts all have resulted in open-lengths victories.

“He was his normal self, well within himself,” Hernandez said. “An easy half, nice and smooth.”

Happy Saver pulls clear in stretch to win Tesio, earn berth in Preakness

Happy Saver earned a berth into next month’s Preakness Stakes on Monday, when he improved his career record to 3 for 3 in the $100,000 Federico Tesio at Laurel Park.

The race was one of five stakes on the card. They were designed as preps for Preakness Weekend stakes at Pimilico. The $1 million Preakness will be run Oct. 3.
