Steve Asmussen is flanked by his three sons, (from l-r) Keith, Erik, and Darren, and jockey Robby Albarado after Curlin gave Asmussen his first victory in a classic in the 2007 Preakness.

BALTIMORE – As the curtain closes on this incarnation of Pimlico Race Course, it’s only fitting that trainers Bob Baffert, D. Wayne Lukas, and Steve Asmussen have horses in the field for Saturday’s 150th Preakness Stakes.

Over the last 45 runnings, starting in 1980, that trio of Hall of Fame horsemen have combined to win the race 17 times. Baffert holds the record with eight, followed by Lukas with seven. Asmussen’s two Preakness wins were among the most meaningful of his 10,874 career victories, the most of any trainer.

Gosger enters Preakness discussion with Lexington Stakes triumph

Coady
Gosger returned $10.60 in winning the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After arriving at Keeneland in late March, Gosger’s first local work came in company with East Avenue, a Grade 1 winner on this track last fall. Although East Avenue easily handled his stablemate, Gosger showed trainer Brendan Walsh plenty to justify stepping up in class for his next start.

Four days after East Avenue revived his Kentucky Derby hopes by finishing second in a photo in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, Gosger threw his hat in the ring for the Preakness Stakes by winning the Grade 3, $400,000 Lexington Stakes on Saturday at Keeneland.

Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority to be dissolved two years earlier than planned

Susie Raisher
The MTROA was created to manage a transition from the private operation of Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park to a state-owned entity.

A budget passed by the Maryland legislature on Monday included a provision that will eliminate the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority at the end of this year, two years prior to when the authority was previously scheduled to be dissolved.

The MTROA was created in 2023 to manage a transition from the private operation of Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park to a state-owned entity. After legislation was passed last year to facilitate that transition, the MTROA led an effort to establish the non-profit Maryland Jockey Club, which is now running the tracks.
