Rushaway has major contender in Crimson China

FLORENCE, Ky. - Given a choice, Barry Irwin might have preferred that Animal Kingdom and Crimson China switch places on the Saturday program at Turfway Park. But due to eligibility criteria, Animal Kingdom runs in the $500,000 Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes while Crimson China settles for a berth in the $100,000 Rushaway Stakes on the undercard.

Riveting Reason off the Kentucky Derby trail

Benoit & Associates
Riveting Reason finished second to Anthony's Cross in the Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Riveting Reason, second in the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes in February in his most recent start, has been turned out for the spring with a hoof injury, according to Maria Ayala, assistant to owner-trainer Myung Kwon Cho.

Riveting Reason was turned out to a local farm in mid-March and is expected to miss two or three months of training, Ayala said Friday. Riveting Reason has had one workout since the Lewis, over five furlongs at Santa Anita on March 5.

“Mr. Cho said it’s better to wait,” Ayala said.

Fair Grounds witnessing Howard's resurgence

Lou Hodges Jr.
Wilkinson, Garrett Gomes up, wins the Lecomte.

NEW ORLEANS – Neil Howard is proof that you can’t keep a good man down. He’s one of the nicest trainers in the game, unfailingly polite, beyond considerate, his main concerns being his horses, his clients, and then, a distant third behind that photo finish, himself – always in that order.

Howard has proven for more than three decades that he knows how to train, witness a Preakness victory by Summer Squall in 1990, a Kentucky Oaks win by Secret Status in 2000, and a masterful campaign that landed Mineshaft the title as Horse of the Year in 2003.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Fog shrouded the opening three furlongs of Dialed In’s final major prep for the Grade 1 Florida Derby on Thursday morning at Palm Meadows. But it was clear to see from the way the Holy Bull winner Dialed In finished down the stretch why trainer Nick Zito was smiling from ear to ear after the work.

NEW ORLEANS – The pace scenario is in his favor, he already has a win over the track, and he looked great the second time he went past the stands when galloping Thursday morning here at Fair Grounds. For Mucho Macho Man (click link for Contender Profile), the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby on Saturday looks like a slam dunk.

Spiral Stakes can launch, end Kentucky Derby dreams

FLORENCE, Ky. – Springtime, and the dreaming is easy. Horsemen have flocked to Turfway Park with the notion that if you can just sneak one in here Saturday by winning the Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes, anything could happen six weeks later in the Kentucky Derby.

“One day, we’re going to come back there and win the Derby, and I’m going to raise that trophy over my head like [Bob] Baffert does,” said trainer Doug O’Neill, laughing, but perhaps only half-kidding.
