Kentucky Derby: Dialed In favored in early betting

Dialed In, trained by Nick Zito, was the 9-2 favorite in early betting on the Kentucky Derby. "He's worthy of it," said Zito.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As expected, Dialed In was made the early 9-2 favorite for Saturday’s 137th Kentucky Derby. Also as expected, the early-bird bettors in Louisville flocked to their favorite son, Calvin Borel, making his mount, Twice the Appeal, the 7-1 co-second choice, along with Nehro.

These are the odds with more than $276,000 bet in the win pool, the majority of that money being wagered ontrack. Only some simulcast outlets sent their money in.

Kentucky Derby: An also-eligible list would have allowed Sway Away to draw in

Sway Away was 21st on the graded earnings list when the Kentucky Derby was drawn Wednesday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The connections of Uncle Mo weren’t the only ones feeling disappointment Friday following his scratch from Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. So, too, were those associated with Sway Away.

Sway Away was one of two horses, the other being Ruler On Ice, that were excluded from an overfilled Derby when entries were taken Wednesday. The two horses ranked 21st and 22nd, respectively, by graded earnings, the preference criteria used to limit the field to its maximum size of 20 horses.

Kentucky Derby: Zayat knows the ups and downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - No one would deny that winning the Kentucky Derby is difficult, in particular owner Ahmed Zayat, who has quickly learned that when it comes to America's best-known race, it's prudent to expect the unexpected.

Kentucky Derby pedigrees tilt more to sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Soldat – who is by War Front – is an example of a Kentucky Derby horse whose sire is known for getting sprinter-milers, not 1 1/4-mile horses.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – North American sires have become more speed-oriented over the last several decades, and that trend is evident in the sires of the top-three performers in the last 30 Kentucky Derbies. But pedigree analysts differ on how significant the trend toward speedy sires might be on the first Saturday in May.

Kentucky Derby: Velazquez to ride Animal Kingdom

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - John Velazquez will ride in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby after all.

Without a mount following the scratch of Uncle Mo on Friday, Velazquez was picked up by the connections of Animal Kingdom later in the morning, according to Barry Irwin, the president of the Team Valor Syndicate that owns Animal Kingdom.

Robby Albarado had been named to ride Animal Kingdom, but Irwin said that when Albarado did not ride at Churchill Downs on Thursday or Friday, owing to a fractured nose suffered Wednesday, that he desired instead to find another rider.

Kentucky Derby: Uncle Mo scratched

A downcast trainer Todd Pletcher (left) and owner Mike Repole announce Friday morning that Uncle Mo has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – To miss the Kentucky Derby is disappointing. To not know why is disconcerting.

In announcing Friday morning that morning-line second choice Uncle Mo would be scratched from Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher could not pinpoint the exact nature of Uncle Mo’s problem. Three veterinarians have examined Uncle Mo, but other than a one elevated enzyme, there is no definitive diagnosis.

Bourbon: A taste of Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. − Bourbon. It’s been called “moonshine’s uptown cousin.” It’s been used as currency and as a painkiller for wounded Civil War soldiers. The artist John James Audubon once made a fortune speculating in it. And it’s the heart of the Kentucky Derby’s official drink, the mint julep.

In 2011 Kentucky Derby, taking a stand against the favorites

At the start of the year, people involved in Thoroughbred racing were speculating whether Uncle Mo would win the Kentucky Derby and go on to sweep the Triple Crown series. Three weeks ago they were asking if he would be fit and healthy enough to perform well in the Derby. This week they were wondering if he would even get to the starting gate. On Friday morning they got the disappointing answer: The colt is scratched from Saturday’s race.
