Mage back to work for next Kentucky Derby prep

Mage is scheduled to return to the work tab on Friday at Gulfstream Park.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Mage, the fourth-place finisher in the Fountain of Youth in just his second career start, will have his first workout since that March 4 race when breezing Friday at Gulfstream Park, assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr. said early this week.

Cox making battle plans for his army of 3-year-olds

Brad Cox, who trains a slew of 3-year-old males at least Kentucky Derby trail-adjacent, if not already traveling the road to the Derby, is solidifying plans for this bevy of horses.

Rocket Can likely to run next in Arkansas Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The imposing presence of reigning juvenile champion Forte in the lineup for the $1 million Florida Derby on April 1 could result in several other top 3-year-old prospects being re-routed elsewhere for their final Kentucky Derby prep. Among them is Holy Bull winner and Fountain of Youth runner-up Rocket Can, who will most likely make his next start the same day at Oaklawn Park in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.

Rocket Can has been galloping but probably won’t breeze until the end of next week, trainer Bill Mott said.

Brave Emperor after qualifying points in Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes at Kempton Park

A stakes winner in France last month, Brave Emperor will be favored to win for the fifth time in his seventh start in the $72,600 Road to the Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes at Kempton Park near London on Wednesday.

The Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes is part of the qualifying points series for a European-based runner for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6. The race offers 20-8-6-4-2 points to the first five finishers.

Forte clear choice in Pool 5 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Forte, winning the Fountain of Youth on March 4, was the 3-1 favorite at the end of Pool 5 wagering.

Pool 5 in the 2023 Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Sunday evening with Forte a clear-cut favorite among 40 wagering options following the customary three-day run.

Forte, a sharp winner of the March 4 Fountain of Youth for trainer Todd Pletcher, closed as the 3-1 favorite, followed by a second Pletcher trainee, Tapit Trice (8-1), winner of the Tampa Bay Derby on Saturday. The mutuel field, the 40th or “all-others” option, was next at 10-1, followed by Practical Move (12-1) and Instant Coffee (19-1). Everything else was 24-1 or higher.

Confidence Game likely to skip Louisiana Derby

Confidence Game, one-length winner of the Rebel Stakes on Feb. 25 at Oaklawn Park, is unlikely to run back March 25 in the Louisiana Derby. Trainer Keith Desmormeaux is keeping options open for Confidence Game, who could run on April 1 in the Arkansas Derby, on April 8 in the Blue Grass, or train right into the Kentucky Derby.

Arabian Knight taken out of training, will miss Kentucky Derby

Arabian Knight had worked twice over a recent five-day period, including six furlongs in 1:13.60 on Thursday.

Arabian Knight, undefeated in two races and rated among the leading candidates for the Triple Crown, has been taken out of training, owner Amr Zedan announced in a message on Twitter late Saturday night.

“Trainer Tim Yakteen wasn’t happy with his last work & we feel it’s in Arabian Knight’s best interest not to rush & allow him more time to develop,” the statement read, in part.

The message said that Arabian Knight will be considered for a summer and fall campaign.

Arabian Knight among Kentucky Derby candidates to work in advance of storm

Arabian Knight, who might run next in the Santa Anita Derby, worked Saturday and then again on Thursday.

Three of the biggest names among the California-based 3-year-olds had workouts at Santa Anita on Thursday, a day before the expected arrival of a rainstorm.

Arabian Knight, who has won his two starts by a combined 12 3/4 lengths, worked six furlongs in 1:13.60 on Thursday. He had worked five furlongs in 59.20 seconds on Saturday.

Reincarnate, a game third with trouble in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 25, worked a half-mile in 47.80 seconds.
