MIAMI – Itsmyluckyday had his final serious tune up for the 2013 Kentucky Derby when working a mile in 1:43.10 shortly after dawn Thursday morning at Calder Race Course.
In 1948, Citation won the Derby Trial on April 27, the Kentucky Derby on May 1, the Preakness on May 15, and – since running in all three legs of the Triple Crown wasn’t quite enough work – the Jersey Derby on May 29 before the Belmont Stakes. He won all five of those races, part of a 19-for-20 campaign that year.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Clockers at Santa Anita timed Kentucky Derby hopeful Goldencents working a half-mile in 48.40 seconds on Wednesday.
Trainer Doug O’Neill said that was only part of the story, that Goldencents worked six furlongs in 1:14.40.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Pure Fun, the only filly in a field of 11 3-year-olds, drew the far-outside post for the Grade 3, $200,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes, to be run Saturday at Keeneland for the 32nd time.
Rosie Napravnik has the call on Pure Fun, a Grade 1-winning filly who will be prepping for a start in the May 3 Kentucky Oaks. She faces a demanding task in the 1 1/16-mile Polytrack race when facing the likes of Winning Cause, Sunbean, Examen, and Cerro.
The Lexington is worth 20 points to the winner toward qualifying for the May 4 Kentucky Derby.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The licensing review committee of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission voted Tuesday to approve a license application for Rudy Rodriguez, trainer of the Kentucky Derby hopeful Vyjack, but under a requirement that Vyjack be monitored by video surveillance while at Churchill Downs.
Rosie Napravnik became the first female rider to win the Kentucky Oaks last year on Believe You Can, and she will get a chance to become the first female rider to win the Kentucky Derby on May 4 after being named Tuesday to ride Mylute, who finished second most recently in the Louisiana Derby under Shaun Bridgmohan.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The winner of the Coolmore Lexington Stakes on Saturday at Keeneland will earn 20 “wild card” points toward eligibility for the May 4 Kentucky Derby, which at this juncture looks like enough points to crack the 20-horse lineup.
Tom Proctor, who will send out Examen in the Lexington, doesn’t much care.
“I don’t need anybody or any points to tell me whether I have a Derby horse or not,” Proctor said with his usual candor. “He’s not even nominated.”
Rosie Napravnik will ride Mylute in the May 4 Kentucky Derby, according to a statement put out Tuesday by GoldMark Farm, which owns Mylute in partnership with Whisper Hill Farm.
