Kentucky Derby workouts: Oxbow has strong five-furlong breeze

[bc_video_id:290059:]LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After a hectic Sunday that featured workouts from five likely Kentucky Derby starters, including potential favorite Verrazano, things quieted down a bit Monday morning.

Only one horse presently committed to the race, Oxbow, turned in an official workout during the 15-minute session reserved for Derby and Kentucky Oaks starters, with two other potential starters, both from the barn of trainer Bob Baffert, Power Broker and Code West, also breezing.

Kentucky Derby: Pletcher will wait and see whether to run Lexington winner Winning Cause

Barbara D. Livingston
If Winning Cause enters the Kentucky Derby, it would give trrainer Todd Pletcher a record six horses in the race.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday morning at Churchill Downs that no decision will be made until as late as next weekend as to whether Winning Cause will run in the 139th Kentucky Derby.

Winning Cause became eligible for the May 4 Derby by earning 20 points with his 6-1 victory Saturday under Julien Leparoux in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.

Illinois Derby: Departing delivers despite wide trip

Four Footed Fotos
Departing, under Brian Hernandez Jr., wins the Grade 3 Illinois Derby by 3 1/4 lengths.

STICKNEY, Ill. – Departing will not run in the Kentucky Derby, but his win Saturday at Hawthorne in the Illinois Derby suggested he is among the elite members of this year’s 3-year-old crop.

Breaking from post 13 and racing wide around both turns, Departing powered to the lead at the top of the long Hawthorne stretch and scored an impressive 3 1/4-length victory in the Grade 3, $750,000 Illinois Derby.

Kentucky Derby: Vyjack has first work since Wood Memorial

David Grening
Vyjack, most recently third in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, rolls around in his pen following his half-mile breeze Friday at the Fair Hill training center.

FAIR HILL, Md. – A visit to the bucolic Fair Hill training center on the Maryland-Delaware border wasn’t originally on the agenda for Vyjack. But if he wins the 139th Kentucky Derby in two weeks, the gelding’s 13-day stay here may prove to be one of the reasons.

Lexington Stakes: McPeek predicts victory for Pure Fun

Benoit & Associates
Pure Fun (No. 1), the winner of the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet in December, drew the far-outside No. 11 post for the Coolmore Lexington Stakes.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Coolmore Lexington Stakes is known as a final stop on the road to Churchill Downs, although that’s meant in the context of the Kentucky Derby.

The maxim might well hold true again Saturday, when the Grade 3, $200,000 Lexington is run at Keeneland, but in this case, the 1 1/16-mile Polytrack race could prove a stepping-stone to the Kentucky Oaks and not the Derby.

Byron King: River Rocks, Ground Transport have appeal in 3-year-old stakes

Tom Keyser
River Rocks has shown good early speed in each of his last three starts, with two wins and a runner-up finish.

Class handicappers are unlikely to find River Rocks of interest in Saturday’s Grade 3 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland given that the colt has scored his only victories at Calder in a maiden race and at Gulfstream against restricted Florida-bred allowance competition.

Nor will hot-hand horseplayers like that jockey James Graham was 0 for 47 at the meet entering Thursday’s card.

Dave Tuley: Parlay often outperforms Triple Crown future wager

We’re past the major prep races on the road to the Kentucky Derby and the field is coming into focus.

With that news, John Avello at the Wynn Las Vegas went ahead and posted odds on individual 3-year-olds to win the Triple Crown. For the past month, bettors have been able to bet the generic “Will any horse win the 2013 Triple Crown?” with a price of +650 (odds of 6.5-1 or winning $6.50 for every $1 wagered) on the “yes” and a price of -850 (risk $8.50 for every $1 you want to profit) on the “no” for the naysayers.

Weekend Warrior for April 20, 2013: Picks for Lexington, Miami Mile, and Illinois Derby

Lou Hodges Jr./Hodges Photography
Sunbean suffered a poor trip in the Louisiana Derby and can improve in the Lexington.

The major Kentucky Derby preps might be over, but that doesn’t mean the 3-year-olds have temporarily conceded the spotlight. Two of Saturday’s biggest races, the Grade 3, $750,000 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne and the Grade 3, $200,000 Coolmore Lexington at Keeneland, are for 3-year-olds. The Illinois Derby, supported by the Grade 3, $200,000 Sixty Sails Handicap, was controversially left off the list of Derby point races. But the Lexington offers 20 Derby points to the winner, and that might be enough to secure a spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby.
